Manor Murder Case, The (Manor_Murder_Case_Hints.txt)

Hints
1. You control two characters in this game: a Law-Abiding Citizen and a Policeman. Both characters
share an inventory even if they are on opposite sides of town.
You can switch back and forth between characters by typing CHANGE or SWAP. If you forget who you are
controlling, the computer will remind you if you type WHO.

2. There are several NPCs in this game, including: the butler, a middle-aged woman, a murderer, an
old man, a police sergeant, and a vicious-looking thug.
Any one of them might be “the killer.” The NPC named The Murderer is not necessarily the killer
– meaning that he is not necessarily guilty of the titular manor murder case.
The first time I played the game, the murderer was the killer. I ended up with a score of 95%.
I tried again to see if I could reach 100%, and the second time through, the Middle Aged Woman was
the killer. I am not sure if this fixed, or if the killer is random.
The following point list shows how points are scored.

POINT LIST
examine scales (find humbugs) 5%
talk to reporters 5%
examine desk (find body) 10%
examine body (find cigarette end) 5%
search drawers (find torch) 5%
search table (find hammer) 5%
give cigarette (to newsman) 5%
cash cheque 5%
search desk (find keys) 5%
mend bridge 5%
arrest killer in cave 10%
drop murderer (in cell) 5%
drop killer (in cell) 5%
buy nails* 5%
buy plank* 5%
buy screws* 5%
buy fruit (veg)* 5%
buy tin* 5%

* Each of the items you can buy costs one pound. Since the only money in the game is a cheque
(British spelling) for four pounds, you can only buy 4 of the 5 items.
That means you can only score 95%, unless I missed some other way to score points.
Incidentally, the game does recognize the verb STEAL, but you appear to get caught every time you
try (which ends the game in failure).
After you use the nails and plank, you can buy the nails and plank again with the remaining two
coins, but you end up with the same score.
Theoretically, you could also buy the fruit or tin of stew, eat it, and buy it again for more
points, but you would end up the same score and not be able to complete the game without
the hammer and nails.

Some things in the game remain a mystery. They may be red herrings, or there may be a way to score
points with them.
1. If you try to GET SOAP, “it is very slippery and it slips out of your hand.” Is this just a
time waster or is there a way to GET it?
All the other objects score points when you find them, not when you GET them.
2. You can SHOOT people if you have the gun and bullets, but you will get arrested and the game will
end in failure. Neither the gun nor bullets are worth points.
3. You can drink the glass of whisky, but it is not worth points and you might get fired (which will
end the game in failure). The glass of whisky is not worth points.
4. The following objects have no obvious purpose, but do score points if you find them (you do not
need to GET them to score the points): humbugs, screws, fruit, and tin of stew.
5. The following objects do not score points if you find or GET them, and do not appear to serve any
purpose: the towel, coffee, and the valuable diamond ring.
Too bad you cannot sell the ring to buy the last object. You can WEAR RING, but no points and no
obvious purpose.
6. The opening instructions lists the verb SAY, but the game does not appear to recognize it.
Perhaps you SAY the right thing to the right person at the right time?
7. You can RING BELL in the police station, but I cannot figure out what to do from there. I assume
you are supposed to ASK the police for something.
