THE BARDIC RITE

This is a very, very difficult and long game. Although your quest is not 
complex (find original music and an instrument to play for the rites), several 
random and chance occurrences and the need to determine who does what and in 
what order, make this a very challenging game. You need to be ready when the 
Bardic Bell rings and need to see the Judges. All are helpful and necessary in 
some way, though you will be double-crossed. Tomas, your rival, keeps popping 
up. If you make mistakes you are taken to jail and the game ends. Because of 
the movement of certain characters, this walkthrough must be followed exactly, 
especially at the beginning when you are carrying the Seal or the knife, i.e. 
no extra commands or typing mistakes. While you do not appear to need to turn 
the lantern off, good adventuring habits prevail.

You are Leopold and begin in your room. INVENTORY (nothing), EXAMINE WARDROBE, 
EXAMINE CLOTHES. Tomas enters and tells you one of the judges has had an 
accident, and there can be no rite without three judges. Go N, EXAMINE SAM, 
EXAMINE HUBERT. He has a pipe. TAKE PIPE, EXAMINE PIPE, EMPTY PIPE, GIVE PIPE 
TO HUBERT, SAY AMUSIC@ TO SAM. He offers you his lute. NO (when given a 
choice). Go S, SW, N, N, W, EXAMINE BED, TAKE LANTERN (you can=t), JUMP ON 
BED, TAKE LANTERN, EXAMINE LANTERN, E, S, S, W, W. You are at a junction of 
two doors.

KNOCK NERKIN. You are ushered in. EXAMINE NERKIN (there are insects in the 
room), EXAMINE WINDOW, CLOSE WINDOW (she won=t let you), SE, E, E, E, DOWN, W, 
EXAMINE PLAQUE (if case of fire, shout fire loudly), EXAMINE CAPTAIN (he is 
strong), N, EXAMINE CAT (he has string and is not friendly), NE, EXAMINE 
PLATTER, TAKE MEAT, NE, UP, EXAMINE BEDS, TAKE POT, DOWN, EXAMINE SERVANTS, 
SING. A bottle is passed around. TAKE BOTTLE, EXAMINE BOTTLE (to wake the 
dead), SW, EXAMINE COOK, TAKE GLOVES, EXAMINE GLOVES (insulated against heat), 
SW, E, EXAMINE TABLE, PULL CLOTH, W, S, W, EXAMINE CASE, PULL CASE, TAKE 
TELESCOPE, N, EXAMINE CLOCK, S, S, S, EXAMINE FRED, SAY AHELLO@ TO FRED. He 
needs his helmet. YES (to his request).

Go N, N, W, W, LISTEN (you hear about a secret passage to the crypt in the 
Lord=s room, and a hint about Apulling a leg@), DOWN, LIGHT LANTERN, W. You 
see Blodgit who is stuck. PULL DOOR (you can=t open it), SAY TO BLODGIT APULL 
DOOR@. It opens. He gives you a reward and tells you to see him later. 
INVENTORY (you have a straw hat), EXAMINE HAT, WEAR HAT, W, SEARCH CELL (you 
get a bucket), E, S, N, E, E, TURN LANTERN OFF, E, E, S, W (Chapel door is 
locked), S, W, W, EXAMINE DOOR. It is the Alchemist=s. There is a flap. OPEN 
FLAP, SHOUT THROUGH FLAP. The alchemist introduces himself and gives you a 
card. SAY AHELP@ TO ALCHEMIST. He wants you to fix a rod to the ruined tower. 
The rope needs to come through the window upstairs.

UP, SEARCH ROOM, EXAMINE VIAL (blue), EXAMINE BED, TAKE BOOK, EXAMINE BOOK 
(about explosives), READ BOOK (you need to find a Umbungabunga leaf, tobacco, 
and burnt cobwebs), DOWN, EXAMINE ROD, SEARCH ROOM, EXAMINE VIAL (red), NE, E, 
E, N, E, SE, SE (an avalanche blocks your way), DROP BUNDLE, NW, NW, W, N, W, 
N, W, EXAMINE RUG. It=s stuck down and has seen a lot of wear. KNEEL (you see 
a message and a symbol), E, S, E, N, EXAMINE CLOCK. You see a design similar 
to that in the Monk=s room. The whole front is a glass door, SMASH GLASS, S, 
S, S, S, UP (you see a guard).


SAY AHELLO@ TO GUARD. You are offered some gambling. YES, EXAMINE COIN, WAIT, 
TAKE COIN, DOWN, EXAMINE SIGN (the room is booby-trapped), CRAWL E (you hear 
an arrow hit the door and a >click=), JUMP, TAKE KNIFE, EXAMINE KNIFE, WRAP 
KNIFE IN CLOTH, W, N (the Captain is suspicious), N, N, E, N, N, W (you see 
Blodgit), SAY AUMBUNGABUNGA@ TO BLODGIT (he tells you it eats insects and puts 
the plant in the pot), TAKE KNIFE, CUT LEAF, WRAP KNIFE IN CLOTH, E, S, WAIT 8 
times (to avoid the Captain), S, E, UP, W, W, W, NW, GIVE POT TO NERKIN. She 
wants music from Sbimms. 

Go SE, KNOCK SBIMMS, SAY AMUSIC@ TO SBIMMS. You see how he opens the desk, but 
finds no music. SAY AHELP@ TO SBIMMS. He asks you to steal the Lords=s Seal 
and drop it off in the Audience Chamber. He tells you the scribe=s name is 
Eric. Go E, E, E, DROP CLOTH, DOWN, W, W, N, W, EXAMINE COBWEBS, MOVE COBWEBS 
(you see the body of a monk), EXAMINE MONK, POUR WINE IN MONK. He awakes, and 
goes off to open the Chapel.

LIGHT LANTERN, LIGHT COBWEBS (you start a fire), E, SHOUT AFIRE@ LOUDLY. It is 
extinguished. TURN OFF LANTERN, W, TAKE COBWEBS, READ BOOK (find a small 
container to put the objects in), PUT LEAF IN BUCKET, PUT TOBACCO IN BUCKET, 
PUT COBWEBS IN BUCKET, READ BOOK (heat the container to the most extreme 
temperature, and it will turn into black powder. Do not move around with it as 
it will explode), E, S, E, N, NE, EXAMINE STOVE, TAKE POTS (the cook leaves), 
PUT BUCKET ON STOVE, TURN THERMOSTAT, WEAR GLOVES, WAIT 8 turns, TAKE BUCKET. 
The cook returns and takes his gloves. READ BOOK (find a small bottle, 
construct a fuse from straw using the diagram, put it in the small container, 
light it and an explosion will occur), PUT POWDER IN VIAL, PUT POWDER IN VIAL.

Go SW, S, W, S (you see a worried Bertrum), SAY AHELP@ TO BERTRUM. He=s 
forgotten where the key to the Chapel is, though remembers it is in a spot 
with a green circle. Go N, E, E, WAIT 7 times, UP, TAKE CLOTH, DOWN, W, W, W, 
N, W, TAKE KNIFE, CUT RUG (you see cobbles), WRAP KNIFE IN CLOTH, EXAMINE 
COBBLES (a green circle), REMOVE COBBLES, EXAMINE HOLE (you get a key), TAKE 
KNIFE, PUT KNIFE IN HOLE, PULL RUG, E. Tomas arrives with a guard and the room 
is searched but nothing is found. Go S, E, S, GIVE KEY TO MONK. He opens the 
Chapel.

Go W, W (you can=t - you need faith and charity), EXAMINE BOOK (you see 
Blurgle - a song), EXAMINE ALCOVE, EXAMINE BOX, PUT COIN IN BOX, SING BLURGLE. 
You can now proceed, but don=t just yet). MAKE FUSE, PUT FUSE IN VIAL, EXAMINE 
VIAL (red), E, N, W, N, NW, EXAMINE DESK (you see an inkwell), EXAMINE SCRIBE, 
SAY AERIC@ TO SCRIBE, SAY ALCHEMIST, GIVE CARD (you are shown into Rubin=s 
room), EXAMINE DOOR, EXAMINE SAFE, CLOSE DOOR, BOLT DOOR, PUT VIAL ON SAFE, 
LIGHT LANTERN, LIGHT FUSE, UP, TURN LANTERN OFF (you hear an explosion), DOWN, 
LOOK IN SAFE. You get the Seal but your hands and clothes are dirty). WRAP 
SEAL IN CLOTH, OPEN DOOR. Eric shoves you out.



Go SE, WAIT 3 times, S, E, N, TAKE SEAL, DROP SEAL, S, E, N, N, WASH HANDS, S, 
S, E, N, W, NE, REMOVE CLOTHES, SW, W, W, W. Sbimms asks you if you have out 
the Seal in the Audience Hall. YES. He leaves a dog on guard and goes out with 
you. Go W, GIVE MEAT TO DOG (he becomes friendly), EXAMINE DESK, LOOK UNDER 
DESK (you see a button), PRESS BUTTON (a drawer comes out), LOOK IN DRAWER, 
EXAMINE MUSIC (you take Nerkin=s music), E, NW. Nerkin asks you if you have 
the music. YES. She goes off to the library. Go W, SAY AHEEL@ TO DOG, DROP 
VIAL, DROP BOOK, DROP CLOTH, E, N, SAY ASTAY@ TO DOG@, S, E, E, E. Sbimms has 
been accused of stealing the Seal, but he accuses you. You are asked 
questions. NO, YES, YES, W, W, W, W (the Judge is locked in his room. You are 
ushered out.

Go N, SAY AHEEL@ TO DOG, S, E, E, E, DOWN, W, N, SAY AGET CAT@ TO DOG. Both

GUARD, SAY AGOBLINS@ TO GUARD. He leaves but forgets his helmet. TAKE HELMET, 
E, N, GIVE HELMET TO FRED. He tells you if you need him to call Orange Arrow. 
Go S, EXAMINE DOOR, TAKE ARROW, N, N, E, EXAMINE WELL, W, N. WAIT (until the 
Captain comes and offers his help), SAY AHELP@ TO CAPTAIN, S, E, SE, SE, SAY 
AMOVE STONES@ TO CAPTAIN. They are moved. Go NW, NW, W, S, N, SAY ATELESCOPE@ 
TO CAPTAIN, S, SAY TO FRED AORANGE ARROW@, WAIT (6 times, so as the Captain 
cannot catch Fred), N, N, W, W, SIT, TAKE BOW, GIVE BOW TO FRED, STAND, E, E, 
S, E, SE, SE, TAKE BUNDLE.

Go UP, TIE ROD TO WALL, TIE ARROW TO ROPE, SAY TO FRED AFIRE ARROW@. He asks 
where. LOOK THROUGH TELESCOPE, SAY TO FRED AFIRE ARROW AT WINDOW@. He needs to 
see the target. GIVE TELESCOPE TO FRED, SAY TO FRED AFIRE ARROW AT WINDOW@. He 
does so, the arrow finds its mark. Fred leaves. It looks like thunder. Go 
DOWN, NW, NW, W, S, W, W, SW. The Alchemist is pleased. You see the 
Frankenhog. The Alchemist offers you a reward in you can get his book from the 
Lord Bard. YES. He tells you the book is in a blue chest in his bedroom. 
You=ll have to steal the chest. EXAMINE FRANKENHOG, TAKE FRANKENHOG. You are 
told he can fetch.

Go UP, NE, E, E, N, W, W, EXAMINE ALTAR, MOVE SLAB, DOWN, LIGHT LANTERN, 
EXAMINE STATUE (Derek), LOOK BEHIND STATUE, W, EXAMINE COFFIN, PULL LEG, 
REDESCRIBE (you see a passage north), N (you are in Lord Rubin=s room), SEARCH 
ROOM, TAKE CHEST, S (you hear a voice saying >you dare?=), E, UP, E, PRAY TO 
DEREK, E, S, W, W, SW, DOWN, GIVE CHEST TO ALCHEMIST. You get a potion and are 
ushered out. EXAMINE POTION (weightlessness), TURN LANTERN OFF, E,, E, N, E, 
DRINK POTION, JUMP IN WELL.

You see a ladder. PUT LADDER ON WALL, E, TURN LANTERN ON, N (you are stopped 
by a Dwarf and thrown in a cell), TAKE BOWL, EXAMINE BOWL (full of cold 
water), EXAMINE THROM, SEARCH THROM (you get a key), THROW WATER AT THROM, 
UNTIE THROM. He tells you to sing. SING. The Dwarves tell you to stop. They 
want their Clonk back. They=d struck a bargain with Tomas. He offers you a 
deal to return with the Clonk. You find yourself in the lower Guard room. Go 
UP, TURN OFF LANTERN, E, N, N, SAY ACLONK@ TO NERKIN (she tells you about it), 
S, S, E, E, E, UP, W, W, N, SAY AHELP@ TO MAN, SAY ACLONK@ TO MAN. He gives it 
to you. EXAMINE CLONK, S (you can=t leave with it, and are given a form to get 
stamped), EXAMINE FORM.

DROP CLONK, S, W, N, NW, EXAMINE DOOR (small keyhole), UNLOCK DOOR, NW, SEARCH 
DESK (you get a chain), EXAMINE CHAIN (signatures can be stamped with it), SE, 
S, E, E, E, DOWN, W, W, W, N, NW, PUT CHAIN IN INK, STAMP FORM, SE, S, E, E, 
E, UP, W, W, N, GIVE FORM TO MAN, TAKE CLONK, S. Tomas hits you and takes the 
Clonk and goes to his room. Go E, N, N. Tomas apologises. If you meet him in 
the Guard cells, he will tell you where he has hidden the Clonk. Go S, S, E, 
DOWN, W, W, W, W, LIGHT LANTERN, DOWN, W. Tomas appears and tells you the 
Clonk is in the cell. He wants a favour. YES.



You go in the cell, and Tomas locks it and drops the key. EXAMINE DOOR, 
DROP FRANKENHOG, SAY AFETCH KEY@ TO FRANKENHOG. He returns with it. 
TAKE FRANKENHOG, TAKE KEY, UNLOCK DOOR, TAKE CLONK, N, E, E, TURN 
LANTERN OFF, E, E, E, E, UP, W, NE, N, SAY AMUSIC@ TO HUBERT. Sam 
relents. Sam asks you what instrument you will play. SAY ACLONK@ TO 
SAM, S, SW, E, DOWN, W, W, S, E, DOWN, E, LIGHT LANTERN, N. You are 
asked if you have the Clonk. YES. They go to party. You and Throm 
leave. Tomas arrives and tells you he is ready to ring the bell. Go W, 
S, SAY AHELP@ TO CAPTAIN, N, E, SAY AGET LADDER@ TO CAPTAIN. He pulls 
it out.

SMASH LADDER, TAKE LADDER, W, N, E, E, UP, W, W, W, N, N, EXAMINE BELL, 
REMOVE CLAPPER, S, S, E, E, E, DOWN, W, W, W, W, DOWN, EXAMINE WALLS. 
You create an entrance north. Go N, N, E. You come into the Dwarf 
party. SING, EXAMINE BARD, TAKE CLONK, W, S. You are accosted by a 
Dwarf. SING, PLAY CLONK. You escape. 

Go UP, TURN LANTERN OFF, E, E, E, E, UP, W, W, W, N, N, REPLACE 
CLAPPER, DROP LADDER. Tomas rushes in and rings the Bell. You are in 
the Audience Hall. Tomas plays. Sam gives you music. You play. You win 
and are awarded the Medal. Score@ 250/250.
