Jack and the Beanstalk (Jack_and_the_Beanstalk.txt)

Solution for Colin Carruthers and Ronald Sellar's Jack and the Beanstalk

A Basic adventure for the ZX Spectrum, published in Your Computer in July 1984.
As Basic games go, it's not bad. Input is reasonably quick, and it accepts
mixed case. There are some synonyms, and a clever trick is that sometimes, both
an object's full name and only the noun are recognised; e.g., you can refer to
the magic goose as both "magic goose" and as just "goose". Unfortunately, this
doesn't work for all verbs; a more consistent use of a subroutine would've
worked well, here. The game is also still Basic-slow, though I must say I've
seen slower, and at least input is OK. In any case, the game is well presented,
with a good use of UDGs for the objects.

Wear boots. South, east, take axe, south, east, take rope, east, north. Wear
gloves. North, west three times, take key. East, tie rope to cow. East. Oil
key. North, take spade. South and east. If a butcher came up and swapped
Daisybell for some beans, good. If not, go west and back east until he turns
up. Drop rope, take beans. West, west, south, sleep.
North. Up, up, and no, not away, but up again. North twice. N, E, W, S. Remove
gloves, unlock door, drop key, wear gloves. Open door. North thrice (don't take
the harp at this point!) east, south. Eat food. North, east, north thrice,
east. Dig sand, look, drop spade, take bag and matches. West, south thrice,
east, south, west thrice, down thrice, drop bag.
Up thrice, north twice, N,E,W,S. Open door, north twice, west, down. Light
match, look, light match, take hammer. Up, east, north twice, east, south,
down. Light match, look, light match, drink wine. Up, break door, east. Take
goose, west, north, east twice, south, west three times, down three times,
drop goose.
Up three times, north twice, N,E,W,S. Open door, north twice. _Now_ take the
harp. From this point on, you can't miss a move or the giant gets you, so be
careful. South twice, west thrice, down thrice. Chop beanstalk.
