Thief's Adventure

#1 Post by Guido »

Hi,
Anyone knows how to cross the device (mantrap) or what to do with the nail in this treasure hunt?

I found the game.

How do you interact with the fence? Selling your possessions doesn't seem to work.

Can you give some hints regarding:

going west from the bar?
at the trash cat?
digging in the dirt?
fishing?
giving the cat something?
at the bush?
at the jail?

Or do I need to get further along in the castle to do any of those things?

1) To look into the trash can you have to do sth with it before :) ----> cat
2) Don´t dig the dirt, just try to get it somewhere else -----> behind the bar
3) I don´t think one has use the fishing pole
4) at the bush:number 2)
5) Jail: Be corrupt!

I´m still stuck at the nail in the wall and the throne(guard)

Almost forgot:Just give valuables to the Fence and your score goes up.But I don´t know if these things have to be used somewhere!

I have made a bit more progress.

I have sold $115.00 worth of stuff to the fence.
Used the rope at the timber, the oil at the rusty door, the cat where the mouse is, the stethescope at the safe, and the hammer at the glass bookcase.

Now I about to explore the elevator.

I too do not know what to do at the throne room (the guard is too honest).

Also don't know what to do at the wall "near the end of the maze", nor at the bottom of the maintenance shaft.

Any suggestions for these places?

I have not yet found the nail you are talking about.

Well, I'm not much futher ahead. Just more questions.

I found the nail, but don't know how to get it out.

The blockage around where the printint press is? Any luck here?

What happens when you shut the furnace off (pressing the black button)? Can't seem to open it.

There is a locked door west of the entrance hall. It looks as if it needs a key. Have you found a key? Have you picked the lock (somehow I don't think this will work).

The box which you can only open, and the mantrap?

So, I apparently am stuck just where you are.

One room in the maze is for opening the clam, one room is a connection to outside if you have unscrewed the wine rack.
You have to press the black button (the sound goes off), then open the furnace, after that press red and again the black one.
It seems you already opened the door west of entrance hall (pick lock).
And although I´m bad at guess-the-verb puzzles I found out that you have to heave  the dummy into the mantrap.
I´ve tried a little more things to the throne or guard but without luck.

My heavens, there's a lot of re-tracing of steps here, and use of objects I would never have considered.

HEAVE the dummy, rather than THROW. That doesn't somehow fit as all the other verb uses were very simple.

OK I'm up to $175.00.

I don't know where to open the clam - I tried every location in the maze - do I need to be holding something in particular? Which particular location is it?

Still don't know what to do at the nail. HAMMERing it doesn't work, nor REMOVing it, nor POUNDing it.

Also at the monument - have you figured out what to do there?

What about the dumbwaiter - just getting into it on the first floor?

And the boarded door at the bottom of the shaft?

And of course, the guard at the throne room...

Sorry, the clam has to be opened in the maintenance shaft (Up in the foyer, under the rug) and not in the maze.

I think the monument is just another link outside/maze just like the wine rack and the rusty door(oil)

Have you booted the PC!!! I´ll give you the thief´s secret word it shows in case you already gave it to the Fence: MERCURY.

Have you used the Hello Sailor cmmand somewhere or is it a red herring?

I have the feeling I´m stuck because of another Heave or similar verb anomalies (probably at the throne, guard). It seems there´s only one missing treasure.

I thought I had tried to go past the boarded up door at the bottom of the maintenance shaft before and couldn't, but this time I managed. Got the pearl.

Is the servant's room a red herring?

Still don't know what to do at the monument.

Still don't know what to do at the packing box, or at the monument, and with the pole and watch (if anything).

Saying HELLO SAILOR when you are in the sinking boat get's you a different (but looks useless) message.

Saying MERCURY at the fence's gets the fence to put a package up on a shelf, but then what?

Re: the nail - any more luck there?

READing the old book gets you the message "alley oops". When you say this it brings you out behind the jailhouse close to the fence's.

What makes you think that you only need one more treasure? I only have $175.00 worth of stuff.

Servants room:You can go south there, save the game and try it several times (you need some luck to survive this one).
The watch is a treasure for Fence.
The only places that seem to have any further significance seem to be the nail, throne and maybe the monument (if it´s not only a short cut)
Does it have any use to bribe the policeman with the wine (wearing the wig)

Cannot help you any further at this moment, but give you my treasure list:
-Crown Jewels
-Pearl
-Aztec knife
-statuette of gold
-Topaz ring
-digital watch
-polished ruby
-IBM PC
-antique sword
-crystal vase
-teapot made of platin
-sapphire clock
-printing plate
-candleabra
-painting
-diamond
-rare book
-ebony cane

OK - I'll try the servants room and S/R.

I did not find the digitial watch to be a treasure. When I tried to sell it to the Fence - I just dropped it.

If the sword is not in the servant's room - where is it?

Re: bribing the policeman - I found that wearing the wig and having the wine got me into the jail. The coins I needed for the guard south of the plaza. Maybe they are interchangeable?

I tried to bribe the guard at the Throne, but it seems he is too honest and won't take anything.

So we are both stuck? Pity.

I see that the antique sword is south of the servant's room.

And now when I try to sell the watch - the fence takes it.

So I have $190.00 now. Is that why you think one treasure is left?

Maybe the package is to give to the guard, but the throne is too heavy to lift.

I agree that we are missing a verb of some kind - at the nail/monument?

BTW - Guido.

I thought I do some searching in rec.games.int-fiction. Somebody had written in saying that Thief's Adventure was "bugged" and "unwinnable".

So other than writing to the guy who wrote it (who lived in New Jersey, USA in 1986), maybe we are really stuck...

They also said that about Castle of Hornadette - another game I am trying to finish. So...
