My First Adventure

#1 Post by apel »

hi - new member here and am excited to catch up on my youth! We're moving abroad and its forced me to clear out all the old junk I've accumulated, old magazines, games etc...

I've ditched most of it - but I'm strangeley resistant to throwing out the old adventure games - I spent hours with these and as a kid dreamed of having lots of cash so I could buy as many as possible!

That never happened, but by begging, borrowing (and copying!) - I managed to egt through quite a few, even though all my friends were Shoot Em Up freaks.

I even managed to get mentioned by Keith Campbell in C&VG on a couple of occasions - the highlight of my aspirations at the time!

The first Adventure i remember playing and completing was called Sim Sala Bim, I think... Graphics, but i think there was text input of some kind... Anyone else remember this one?! - After that I was smitten and moved quickly into Melbourne House's The Hobbit (all on C64)

If you want to give up your old games the person to speak to is Seve Brown from the .TZX vault.

He would transfer all the old tapes into runnable games for the pc.

Best of luck

Hi and welcome!
Yes, I remember Zim Sala Bim rather well, though I have to say that I found it incredibly sluggish and annoying :) It's quite similar to African Safari.
ZSB can be found here:

Btw, if you have any manuals, I'd be happy to receive them so I can upload them to CASA.
And if you're a Keith fan, do check out our interview (in the Various section of the main site)

thanks for the reply. I'll see if Ive got anything useful. Great interview with Keith - I always wondered what had happened to him. And I remember that black day all to well, when I opened my copy of C&VG, only to find his column had gone!

Another new member here. Classic text adventure games, they're the best!

My first game, the first one I completed on my own was Level 9's Snowball, it took me quite some time but I was determined to finish it by myself with no help from anyone.. I did it, great fun it was too, although frustrating at times.

Most of the games I'd completed before that are now considered Scott Adams classic games, we used to play in groups competing to finish a game or get further than the other teams within a set time limit.. great fun we had!! None other than a certain Keith Campbell, he of C&VG fame (I worked at the same place as him) organised the adventure evenings, we sometimes played his own games, we often ended up play testing them for him!

Does anyone know if Keith is still around, anything to do with computers or text adventures these days?

Hi Terry, and welcome among like minded enthusiasts :)

I gave up on Snowball a long time ago, mostly because I couldn't be bothered to handle all those colour coded rooms. Return to Eden was a great deal more interesting, in my humble opinion.

Sadly, Keith passed away some time ago - you can read about it here. Fortunately, I managed to interview him prior to his death - you can read the interview here.

Thanks for the welcome! :D

Snowball was a challenge and my first completed game, there were more interesting games but from what I can remember most were fantasy titles but Snowball was (is) a sci-fi game.. which I prefer.

Sad to hear about Keith he was a great guy, the adventure evenings he organised were really enjoyable.. back in the good old days. Thanks for pointing me to the links.
