Missing Atari 8-bit titles

#1 Post by www.atarimania.com » Sat Nov 12, 2022 12:46 am

Hello folks,

Congratulations on a fantastic website!

I initially registered to let you know about a missing title made with Adventure Master on the Atari... but Garry beat me to it as he added the program the day I wanted to post about it! Was also going to provide a list of games recovered by Atarimania in the past months but I see this is taken care of as well

Anyway, just so I don't come empty-handed, here are two freshly dumped titles:
- Adventure Maker
- Time Gate

Additional note: you can safely remove Twisted Forest from the archive. This reference comes from our site and a mislabeled cracked disk I had. It turns out this is not an unknown game at all but just how Infocom's Sorcerer opens!

Firstly, thanks for the info on 'Time Gate' and 'Adventure Maker'. I hope you can keep us updated whenever a new Atari adventure is discovered.

Seeing as we now have a thread on missing Atari 8-bit titles, here are some games to look for. I have divided these into three categories: (a) games in the database with no known dumps, (b) games not in the database and known to have existed, (c) games not in the database and not known whether they exist. For (b) and (c), I haven't added these to the database until it can be confirmed that they are adventures.

You really did your homework there, I'm impressed!

Let me give you a very quick opinion on some of the titles and we can go into more detail afterwards.

Never released on the Atari (though you can't rule out the existence of prototypes for some of them):
Alice in Wonderland
Amnesia
Breakers
Coveted Mirror, The
Crimson Crown, The
Critical Mass
Death in the Caribbean
Masquerade
Oo-Topos
Revenge of Rigel
Rigel's Revenge
Ronin
Skull Island
Star Trek - The Promethean Prophecy
Twisted
Two Heads of the Coin
Zossed in Space

Duplicate entry:
Detektiv Ray Cooper In Der Leise Tod => Leise Tod, Der

Definitely sold, though giga rare (not properly listed on Atarimania but both games qualify as adventures, you can play the Apple ][ versions online on archive.org):
Adventure Alpha
Islands of Beta, The

Will have to investigate on some of the others, a number of programs are unknown to me.

There's a lot there... I'll look through in more detail at some point, many of them have existing notes that we've added to their CASA entries exploring possible Atari versions, but some ones that initially jump out at me...

Behind Closed Doors 9 (John Wilson, Pension Productions, 2020) (a) (Did anyone capture John's web site before he passed away? It would be a shame for all his hard work to be lost.)
All John's stuff is still online. See...
https://zenobigames.blogspot.com/2020/1 ... dated.html
...for the last version of that one. I don't think John was building specific Atari 8-bit disk images for his z-machine stuff, though?
Dennis through the Drinking Glass (J Sosta, Midnight Magic Computing, 1984) (c) (advertised in Computer & Video Games, November & December 1984, p. 208; January 1985; February 1985. J Sosta, 141 Plimsoll Road, Nighbury, London, N4 2ED)
Mr Sosta just seems to be a reseller in these adverts, so "Dennis" is actually just the existing "Denis through the Drinking Glass" by Applications Software Specialities that we already have in the database.
Revenge at Rigel (c) (same as below?)
Rigel's Revenge (Mastertronic) (c)
This one seems very unlikely to me.
Tebbit, The (Applications Software Specialities, 1984) (a)
Extremely unlikely to ever find this on any platform as all copies were destroyed (potentially before release) and even ASS didn't retain any. I can't recall if I asked James Byrne about this. Will do so, if he pops up again over at Stardot.

On the subject of Atari games, Garry... You mentioned an "official" 2005 version of Graeme Yeandle's Magic Castle recently. Is there a source/reference regarding that official status?

Can you use this txt file to make a working copy? I changed the MSX version into the Atari version using the book. It has only a few differences in the code.

I'll try to keep the list updated. As games are found and preserved on Atarimania, I'll delete them from the list. For games that were advertised or promoted, but never released, I'll leave them on the list, but mark them in red.
All John's stuff is still online.
Thanks. I was using the wrong link. I found 'Behind Closed Doors 9'. It looks like this might have been the only game that John ported to the Atari 8-bit. I'll take a closer look later, but the other Atari games are for the ST.
On the subject of Atari games, Garry... You mentioned an "official" 2005 version of Graeme Yeandle's Magic Castle recently. Is there a source/reference regarding that official status?
On reflection, I think I was mistaken. Graeme Yeandle's site only lists the Spectrum versions, so he probably didn't do it. The version on Atarimania was released in 2005 and credits John E, so John E must have done the conversion.
I own the book with the Atari versions.
Do you have a scan of the book or know of a scan of the book. If so, I'm happy to do the conversions. I would have done the same thing as you and modified one of the existing versions. I can certainly make a working copy from the text version. I'll download that and report back a little later. Mind you, I'll have to translate them to English to actually play the games, but I think it's important for the original Dutch games to be preserved.

The following games on the list were sent to me for testing, either by Les Ellingham, publisher of Page 6, or the original author. As far as I know, they were never revised or published after I returned my test comments, so I may have the only copies in the world. The only trouble is that I no longer have a disk drive that can read the floppies and I don't know if they're still readable after all these years. If they can't be recovered, it's no great loss, as no one knew they existed in the first place and some of them were very buggy. I've ported them to Inform 6, based on my original maps and playing notes, and expanded them quite considerably. I'll publish these when they're finished. (This might be a good Christmas/New Year project.)
  • Breakdown (this was the inspiration for 'Acid Rain')
  • Kingdom of the Arc (enhanced version tentatively titled 'Search for the Lost Ark')
  • Pirate's Booty (enhanced version tentatively titled 'Dead Man's Chest')
  • Sabotage Part 1 (very similar to 'Crash Dive', so no plans to enhance this one)
  • School Adventure (enhanced version tentatively titled 'Winchester High')
  • Time Tower (enhanced version tentatively titled 'The Time Crystals of Cythii')

Hi Alex,

There were a few typos in the listing for 'De Vloek van Nefre a Toth' as follows:
In line 1070, delete comma after C$.
In line 6070, OB(NO) should be O(NO).
In line 6100, change DUMMYT to DUMMY.
In line 6130, change semi-colon to colon.
The second line 6150 should be line 6170.

Once these corrections are made, I was able to play it through to the end using your solution on CASA.

Here's a self-booting disk image if anyone wants to try it. Unzip it first, of course.

Thanks, I wanted to ask you where the titles came from, I have the answer now.

You should really do something about your disks so they can be preserved, even the ones that appear faulty. A number of people could dump the programs for you.

I'm curious about the following adventures, I couldn't find any reference to them:
Dragon 2
Realm of Enchantment I
Worlds in Collision

I may have Literary Fantasy somewhere but, IIRC, this is just an unauthorized compilation of SoftSide games.

Finally, I don't know if this is the right place to ask but it appears you typed in / uploaded many titles not available before. Can these be downloaded somewhere? With your permission, I'd love to add them to Atarimania.

I'll have to find them first. Do you have a contact in Sydney? If so, I could deliver them. Otherwise, I'd have to post them and I'd hate them to get lost in the mail. Send me a PM and we'll work something out.

I have no idea. I've no doubt come across them somewhere and added them to my list. Unfortunately, I've never kept records of where I saw them mentioned, so it may even be a false lead.

I suspected that it might be the name of a disk compilation, rather than the name of a game. If you can confirm that one, I'll cross it off the list.

And I'd love you to add them! I've had trouble submitting things in the past, so I got a bit disillusioned and didn't bother any more. Send me a PM with the best way to send them and I'll make sure you get them. Can you also tell me the best way to send updates/corrections to the database entries?

I don't have a scan. I will give you a txt file for "het geheim van Landusië" soon. I'll do my best to make less typos. Sorry about that. I shouldn't do several things at the same time I guess

At the moment I don't have a version of "De schat van deInca's". So maybe I'll just give you a scan of that game, but maybe I change the code of "Knight Riders Adventure". That game is an exact copy of the game with the same multiple choice solution. Only the text has been changed into another story.
