Savage Island part 1 - no knife?

#1 Post by Hopalong » Mon Aug 17, 2020 9:03 pm

OK - I've moved onto Savage Island part 1 and hit a snag.
I've got to the part where you dive down in the lake to go north and get knife, then swim east and get block.
Except - it doesn't know what 'north' is, or 'south', only east & west
Of course, you need the knife to cut the vines...

So I gave Savage Island part 2 a go - and completed it first time through.
Gradually working my through the dozens of adventures I've found online.

Perhaps it's me. I'm using the FROTZ windows interpreter to play the .z5 & zblorb games
Is there something else I should use?

I have git for .gblorbs, TADS for .gams, ZXSpectrum4 for spectrum games (Z80, SNA, TZX)
Oh, I also have ADVENT.EXE for the Scott Adams .DAT files, but save games with that give me an error message 'Bad action line(10)'

Any advice for this newcomer would be welcome :)

Do a Google search for emulators for each of the 8-bit and 16-bit platforms that you're interested in. There are lots to choose from. Some of these can be difficult to use if you're not familiar with the original platform, not because of the emulator, but because of the original hardware and operating system. The ZX Spectrum is the worst, but it sounds like you're familiar with that.

As you're using Windows, Frotz for Z-code games, Glulxe for Glulx games. Actually, rather than me listing 101 different interpreters, pay a visit to the IF Archive and have a poke around. You'll find lots of neat stuff there, including Scott Adams interpreters.

The Spectrum is the easiest system to emulate! :) So much more logical than all the other horrible ones. :) :D With their cloads and chains and horrible 8,1 nonsense.

Very easy to play without installing anything too...
e.g. Go to the game page...
https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/entry/6 ... e_Island_1

...and click on the QAOP link further down the page...
https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/playonl ... wnid=42446

Playing instantly. :)

Lots of other online emulators for other systems too. This is an easy way to play Scott Adams stuff...

Click play ifiction links.

[I have no idea what the "ZXSpectrum4" you mentioned is, by the way]

[Edit: Ah... http://www.zxspectrum4.net/ ... never heard of that one. Not one of the ones most people I know use]

Our own site has a page about emulators - https://solutionarchive.com/emulators/ - though it is several years old and some of the links may be out of date. But not to worry as we also have a thread about emulator links - https://solutionarchive.com/phpBB3/view ... 6&start=15 - though is a few years old and some of the links may now be out of date...
