It's quite common in the UK to refer to time in that manner. Of course we rarely say fifteen to, fifteen past, or thirty past the hour, we like to confuse things by switching from minutes to fractions of an hour - quarter to, quarter past, and half past ;)

Nevertheless, it takes a lateral, creative mind to come up with that answer. Brilliant, Alastair.

Now, help me out with my other games.

Ok, so here's a brief overview of the current sorry state of affairs ;):

- We now have a goblet - use unknown
- If you push the button after having released the butler, he returns and says you've broken the button. Either way it doesn't seem to do anything
- You can enter the tunnel below the moat but apparently not return that way
- You can get the sword from the troll by dropping the jewel first
- There's also a skull down there - use unknown
- There's a hole in the ceiling, which would make a fine escape route - if only we could reach it
- There's a wooden box in the cemetary with a tombstone marked "danger" next to it. I presume you can use the sword to open it.
- I have a hunch that just giving the dog to the man should produce some result - otherwise it's a waste of money buying the chain

Anything I missed?

The goblet is the object we are trying to return to the church.

To add to the list.
- How do you get into the church?
- You can eat the garlic, so does the garlic have another use to that of getting past the bat (which you can pass just by carrying the garlic) ?
- Could it be that you enter the tunnel through the hole and leave via the moat? Or maybe you need to stand on the troll's or butler's (see below) shoulders to reach the hole - just don't ask me how.

Re. the button. I have tried pulling and turning the button but that has the same result as pressing it. I have even tried pressing etc. the wall, floor, ceiling and sign (well if your told not to press the button why not?) but the game does not understand those commands. Perhaps the puzzle is how to retain the butler?

Some extra things, though no further to a solution.

First LOOK IN SAFE, you will find something that you can WEAR (and also TAKE OFF if your hands are not full). If you do wear it, you will no longer be troubled by footsteps.

Second, if you wish to see the pictures again type DRAW (pity, I thought I was on to something when I drew the sword and the screen cleared).

I started playing this one for a while. I drew a map. However I don't manage to find the safe. After I READ THE BOTTLE, I went to the television and did TURN CHANNEL 5 ON, but the painting is still inside the secred room. I tried WATCH TELEVISION. Which command do I have to type?

Another question did anyone find the location of the candle holder on the wall ?

I checked the programm code and made a list of all the objects:

-a lit candle lies discarded here
-a candle lies discarded here
-a wooden box lies by a tombstone
-near you there is an axe
-a lone oak tree towers above you
-a tree lies over a deep moat
-there is a man standing here . You can hear the man shouting rover
-there is a barking dog here
-a hacksaw lies near you on the floor
-length of chain lies discarded here
-hacksaw with a broken blade
-match
-clove of garlic
-bat flying overhead
-bottle of wine on the floor
-empty wine bottle
-castle butler lies on the cellar floor
-an open wooden box lies by a tombstone. A dark, evil man lies inside
-an empty box lies by a tombstone
-there is a neckbrace here
-a key lies discarded here
-shelves cover the wall
-a dead man lies on the floor. He is holding a bottle of perfume
-a painting hangs on the wall
-there is a safe in the wall
-there is an open safe in the wall
-i can see a handmirror
-an ugly medusa is standing here
-an ugly medusa lies dead on the floor
-there is a candle holder on the wall
-there is a candle holder on the wall containing a candle
-there is a button on het wall. A sign below says do not press the button
-there is a broken button on the wall.
-there is a panel on the south wall it looks false
-a room lies south
-there is a panel on the north wall
-a room lies north
-two gold pieces are lying on the floor
-one gold piece lies discarded here
-i can see a human skull
-there is a troll lying here. He looks fast asleep
-i can see a magic sword
-there is a troll here looking at a fine jewel
-a fine jewel lies here
-there is a precious goblet here

I can give an answer to some of your questions doing this:
Gunness wrote:- We now have a goblet - use unknown
you need to take it inside the church to end the game

Gunness wrote: - You can enter the tunnel below the moat but apparently not return that way
see below
Gunness wrote:- There's also a skull down there - use unknown
No idea what to use this for.
Gunness wrote:- There's a hole in the ceiling, which would make a fine escape route - if only we could reach it
Not an escape route , but the way to enter the tunnel I suppose (see below).
Gunness wrote: - There's a wooden box in the cemetary with a tombstone marked "danger" next to it. I presume you can use the sword to open it.
You're right, but you should also wear the object from the safe
Gunness wrote:- I have a hunch that just giving the dog to the man should produce some result - otherwise it's a waste of money buying the chain
If you don't give the dog to the man, you can't enter the castle.
Alastair wrote:- How do you get into the church?
You need the object you find in the wooden box.
Alastair wrote:- You can eat the garlic, so does the garlic have another use to that of getting past the bat (which you can pass just by carrying the garlic) ?
Don't eat it because when you do so someone runs away with the object from the wooden box.
Alastair wrote:- Could it be that you enter the tunnel through the hole and leave via the moat? Or maybe you need to stand on the troll's or butler's (see below) shoulders to reach the hole - just don't ask me how.
Yes, if you do it like that, you can safely leave the tunnel past the crocodile. Problem is how to enter the tunnel by the hole :) . I guess it is something with the button or by putting the candle in the candle holder if I know where to find it.

Now one question from me:
-When the safe is present how do you open it: OPEN SAFE, FIVE TO FIVE does not seem to work?

If you have found the location of the candle holder and you put the candle into the holder, you can PUSH HOLDER. You get the message "a door moves open revealing the entrance to a room". Inside the secret room a door to the east has opened and when you walk east you get the message "OK. The door closes and you fall through a hole in the floor". You've entered the small room through the hole in the roof!!

It seems there only is one problem to solve: where is the candle holder? After that we can solve the game.

Fantastic work Alex, from your map are you stating that the candle holder is in the secret room? Also, have you found any use for the button?

I'm up to speed as well. I presume the key is in the box, which I can't get to without the sword, which I can't get to without the candle holder.
Sigh. I'll keep looking. But I'm somewhat hindered by the buggy version from STH, which keeps displaying blank messages (such as when looking in the safe).
I used to have a fixed version, but it went missing when my laptop was stolen.

@Alastair: I've searched the secret room thoroughly - unless this is another guess-the-word puzzle (like OPEN SESAME) I think the holder must be somewhere else.

No, the secret door is in the sceret room. I don't think the candle holder should be there. It was quite complicated to locate the location because I didn't have a clue where the candle holder should appear, but I tried every location inside the castle untill when I put it inside a specific room a door opened when I pulled it. I will do some more testing tonight to be sure. However knowing in which location the candle holder should appear (it is hidden at the beginning of the game), does not mean I know how to make it appear. That's the one puzzle I have to solve yet.
Alastair wrote:Also, have you found any use for the button?
Not yet. I noticed you can only press it after the man has been murdered in the reading room. If you press it before nothing happens. Maybe it is just a red herring. But on the other hand if you don't have to use the button which object one should use to make the candle holder appear? The shelves in the reading room are also an object which aren't used yet. Maybe something has to be done with them? I guess we just have to try.

If you like I can upload a version where the candle holder has been made visible (if someone is curious to see the rest of the game and can't wait to solve the last puzzle first :) )

Jacob, a good working copy can still be found on the internet. If you want to I send you my copy.
