House of the dead Spectrum

#1 Post by Alex »

I've been playing this game on the spectrum for some days now but it appears I'm stuck. I've the following problems:

-Can't find the scroll
-Can't find the magic ring (if it is needed because a lot of objects seem to be useless)
-What to do in the dark room east of the spare bedroom (The torch does not seem to help there).
-How to enter the magic room of the necromancer east of his bedroom? I suppose you have to do something with the large mirror.

Anyone wants to try?

I've made a map of the game which isn't finished yet, but it can be used if needed by someone(When it is ready I'll upload the final version to the website without the numbers). WARNING: It does contain some spoilers.

Just found the magic ring, but it appears to be useless. Maybe the scroll can be obtained by doing something in the hollow oak? Or maybe you need the magic ring, the magic wand and the magic spell together?

I played this back in 2007, but never finished it.

Maybe I'll revisit it.

Thanks to your map I have made a bit more progress, though it's tough since I can't print it.

I have made it to the mausoleum. Found the ring, but the scroll you refer to. What to do with the dust? Nor the spell?

I also can't get past the pikes.

I think I need help.

I don't know the use of the dust nor the spell. Perhaps they are used to find the scroll somehow. I’ll try if I’ve some more luck tonight with the hint you gave me.

There are two different kind of pikes. At three locations you have blue statues with pikes. These only can be passed one way. If you pass them the other way around you are killed by the spikes. At one location (near the gateway at the beginning of the game) there are red statues. These have to be destroyed to be able to leave through the gate and solve the game. You can only do this after you’ve read the scroll. The scroll can only be read at a certain location and tells you a magic word to destroy the red statues.

I discovered you need it to solve the game.

Also I discovered it is possible to end the game without collecting the scroll when you know the magic word which is written on it, but of course without cheating it is impossible to solve the game without finding the scroll besides after finding the scroll you've to solve some more puzzles to be able to read it.

So, the scroll... where is it?

It seems there are holes you make, but can't enter them. At least I haven't found a phrase to do so.

Well that’s the one thing I don't know about this game :( . The map I made does contain all the game locations. Being completely stuck I searched the program code. It should be somewhere I guess. Although the program does contain some bugs. For instance to wind/turn the winch the program code tells you need the rope, but this can be done without the rope. When you re-enter the music room sometimes you are killed although you're wearing the earmuffs. I couldn't find any special command to find the scroll but some parts of the game data I could not decode. Perhaps it just appears by dropping an object in a certain location because that part of the program code isn't very clear to me. The way this program has been written is very interesting but I shall not bother with becoming too technical. I will keep trying. Maybe I get some brilliant idea while I'm hiking through South-America :)

Which holes do you mean?

Well, there is a hole at the piano. How do you get down there?

I think there is another altar you need to do something to? Push? move? The priest's room?

BTW - around the ruined rooms, it seems that when you go east or down/up, or south down/up (can't remember which one it is) you end you at the same location.

I know what the secret word is, but not where to use it. There also should be a rope somewhere, no?

I think there are more than a few bugs here, and maybe a few lines of code left out?

The hole which appears after playing the piano is the opening to the north where you can enter the necromancer’s magic room.
terri wrote:I know what the secret word is, but not where to use it.
The secret word has to be used to destroy the red statues. But this can only be done when you are in the possession of a certain object.

The rope can be found inside the gatehouse.
