You need the drumstick, but before you can use the gong you have to get it out of there. You need the notepad to do this. Because of the noise you can't say commands, but you can write them down.

Did you solve the formula on the notepad? You''ll need the value of x later on
.

I tried, using my highschool algebra. It's a cubic equation (that I know), but don't know how to solve cubic equations.
The dinghy, the symphony, the skates, the ticket, the pills and the ball. (I wanted to take the gong and the drumstick also but I couldn't because my hands were full)
. I didn't take the skates, as I figured one already used them in the dome in order to explore the maze. Can't remember if I found something there - maybe the entire maze is a red herring. Did you need them again? You didn't take the notepad? I didn't find any ball. Where is it?

And the rod - where did you use it? Is it to hit the gong?
You have to eat the pills and wait one turn before you enter the sea else the pills won't work. You can use this turn to take the mahjong and then go east untill you reach the other shore.
I thought I had tried waiting, but I guess I didn't do something right.
I did find an e-mail of the author. If we really get stuck I always can try asking him. Allthough he wrote it when he was 16 years old back in 1984 maybe he will remember.
Good luck with that. I tried writing to the author of Elysian Fields, who seemed willing to help, but didn't/couldn't.

I'lll just give you the value of x which is 6396 (won't bore you with maths :)).

You need the skates one more time to reach an object. The first maze of ice contains the bracelet, library ticket and the aqualung.

About the pills you have to time it very carefully because if you wait longer they also won't work.

The notepad is only needed to calculate x and to obtain the gong and therefore you don't need to take it inside the cave.

The crystal ball is inside the caves close to the entrance before you jump into the river.

The rod is needed at the end of the game solving the problem to find the final treasure with the detector. I did this, but could not end the game because I had to leave a lot of treasures inside the banqueting hall. I don't know how to return to the forest. I can't take the gong there and if I could it would be useless also because you can't take all the objects with you using the gong in one time and it is not possible to return inside the caves to get the rest of the objects. There should be some other way, but I don't know how.

Send me a private message, so you won't bore anyone else. I used to be good in math. Use it or lose it, as they say.

So, you mean later, not in this maze?

OK.

Yes, of course, I did find that. Duh!

I dropped the gong (and anything that gave one points) in the cottage. One exception to this is the trumpet, which you need to use at the wall before you can drop it. There may be other things one can/should use first before dropping them.

I'll see how I progress and will undoubtedly write again.

PS did you do anything at the oak tree? North of the cedar forest?

I have made it across on the dinghy. Carrying what you said you had. I can't seem to do anything at either the north or south beaches. I tried using the dinghy to go other places, but that doesn't work (maybe I have not explored all possible exits). I can dig a hole in both locations, but I cannot seem to enter it.

While there are some glitches to this game, it continues to amaze me how adolescents could write such intriguing games. Elysian Fields was like that also. Very evocative games, challenging, maybe sometimes a bit too many red herrings, or dead-end locations, but...I suppose it would help to be technically savvy, but it takes more to write a game.

I can recall my godson trying to write a game, many years ago. I should ask him what happened to it...

BTW - there are 2 other "xanadu games" which I am also playing, so I will leave these for later.

Anyway, help is needed.

No, I couldn't find anything usefull there.

Yes, accross the ocean.

After you jumped into the river you should:
DROP AQUALUNG, GET BALL, GET DINGHY, GET SYMPHONY, GET SKATES, GET LAMP, GET TICKET, GET PILLS (These objects you first had to drop into the river to be able to take them here), N, EAT PILLS, GET MAHJONG, E, E, E, E (The dinghy drifts away).

You can now go east to visit the rest the of the game.

If you didn't take the rod with you, where did you find it again?

I haven't yet found the banknote and dulcimer.

What to do at the cashpoint machine? It says to insert your card. What card - the one you used at the dome? And no longer have?

What to do at the drawbridge?

What to do with the cake, other than eat it?

How do you get out of the pit?

Where is the battery for the detector?

How does one return from the hall area - the chandelier is no longer functional.

Say KRIEG in the wooden room which will take you east of the oak tree. But them what? Can one return for the other treasures?

Thanks, with this I was able to solve the game. I've uploaded a walkthrough and included your name as well.
terri wrote:Can one return for the other treasures?
Yes, you can enter the same door in the oak tree to enter these rooms again.
terri wrote:If you didn't take the rod with you, where did you find it again?
I returned to the forest using the gong.
terri wrote:I haven't yet found the banknote and dulcimer.
The dulcimer is in the maze with the slices of cake. The banknote you can get from the cashpoint machine.
terri wrote:What to do at the cashpoint machine? It says to insert your card. What card - the one you used at the dome? And no longer have?
You'll find it beyond the drawbridge.
terri wrote:What to do at the drawbridge?
You'll need some music to lower it.
terri wrote:What to do with the cake, other than eat it?
You've to collect all 6 pieces to make a whole cake. This is one of the treasures you've to take to the cottage.
terri wrote:How do you get out of the pit?
You'll find an usefull object beyond the drawbridge
terri wrote:Where is the battery for the detector?
It's inside one of the objects you are carrying but you'll need the rod to obtain it.

Use the gong but only after you opened the door in the wooden room else you won't be able to return in these rooms again.
