technical question

#1 Post by terri »

I am playing Zepherus, a Spectrum game. I have finished Part 1, and it gives me codes to play parts 2 and 3. How do I reset the computer to load part 2?

It would help if we knew which emulator you are using as the method may be emulator dependent.

Spectatulator version 7.0.1. I have no idea whether one needs to save one's game first, or whether there are three "separate" parts.

I can't help with Speculator, but I guess that if the game gives you a code when you complete a part but no specific instructions to save the game then there is no need to save your game before tackling the next part.

Thanks Alastair.

I still don't know how to reset the game to load Part 2. Maybe I'll write to the author.

I don't use Spectaculator myself. I prefer Zxspectrum4.net.

You don't have to save the game to enter part 2 or 3. What you have to do is to turn of autoplay and load the game manually.

In spectaculator you do this the following method:

-If the cassette recorder is not visible click Cassette recorder in the view menu
-Turn off the auto load button (it's the second button on top; the one with the keyboard image)
-Below you see the table of contents. Press the fast forward button until the blue line in the table of contents is on the start of the second part
-now enter load"" on the screen of the emulator
-It's possible you need to press the play button on the cassette recorder screen (couldn't get that clear from the manual)
-the second or third part should load depending where you fastforwarded the tape image

Thanks Alex

I tried to follow your instructions. Found the Cassette recorder button.
Turned off AutoLoad.
Found part 2 and highlighted it (blue).

I also tried following my instructions on "how to load programs from virtual cassette" but that dodesn't help either.

It says "if you have auto load disabled, you will need to reset the Spectrum manually and enter the appropriate command in basic to start loading the program."

That is probably what you are telling me to do.

I can't type in "quotation marks." Looking at the keyboard map (I tried something like this in the past), it says things like K, L C, which I have no idea what they are, then Symbol SHIFT (right shift), and P. But I still cannot get quotation marks.

I should NOT play anything more sophisticated than a basic game. Sigh...

I could send you a snaphot file (.SNA) of the second part which you can play without manually using the cassette recorder. Unfortunately when I try to upload it to this forum I get the message that the extension is not allowed to be uploaded nor winzip files not even when I try to send it by private message.

Terri, the actual key that an emulator uses to represent 'Symbol Shift' may vary from emulator to emulator, but the most likely candidates would be the Ctrl, Shift, and Alt keys (and to complicate things further, it may be either the left or right hand key that is used). So I suggest just trying out Ctrl+P, Shift+P, and Alt+P and noting the results.

You won't be able to upload a .sna file to the forum but I thought that .zip files did work. You cannot, however, send any attachment by private message.

I'm at work now but I'll send them tonight. Them because the second part of the game loads in 3 seperate parts (intro, manual and game). I'll explain it in my -email.

I don't know why this occurs, as the board settings specify that attachments are allowed, in the forums as well as in PM's.

I got your stuff, Alex, at home.

So I will let everyone know if/when I succeed.

About the quotation marks, and those L,K things. I found the keyboard map in the Spectaculator documentation. It said there that the Symbol Shift Key was the right shift key. Didn't say anything about Cntrl and Alt keys.
