Ok, I wrote
another program so that I could crack the code manually. I seem to have it. The conversion of letters goes like this:
A->B B->I C->G E->E F->K
G->L H->D I->F J->M K->N
L->O M->A P->R Q->S R->T
S->H T->C U->U V->V W->W
Now how the hell you use mathematics to get that, I don't think I'll ever know. So for you lazy people, that comes out to:
Having only one hand made it hard to count
when I was racing off the mar but the
system I figured out worked well. It
seems more natural than the numbers I
learned in school
I wish I knew what the hell that means. I couldn't be more pissed off if I got "drink your Ovaltine" (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdA__2tKoIU). I'm going to get to the bottom of how that code cracker I wrote failed me.

OOPS! Looks like the manual cracker I wrote had a few bugs. I figured out what was wrong w/the automatic cracker, and it churned out a few more sensible messages
HAVING ONLY ONE HAND MADE IT HARD TO COUNT
WHEN I WAS PACING OFF THE MAP BUT THE
SYSTEM I FIGURED OUT WORKED WELL. IT
SEEMS MORE NATURAL THAN THE NUMBERS I
LEARNED IN SCHOOL
HAZING ONLY ONE HAND MADE IT HARD TO COUNT
WHEN I WAS PACING OFF THE MAP BUT THE
SYSTEM I FIGURED OUT WORKED WELL. IT
SEEMS MORE NATURAL THAN THE NUMBERS I

Still, that doesn't seem to have any relationship to math, and I don't see how it helps me get to the next step... *sigh* those silly 80s adventure games

You seem to have got it before I had a chance to work on it, it seems to be a simple subsitution cypher. Difficult to work out, but not as bad as it could be.

"Having" sounds more logical than "hazing".
I agree that the passage seems too enigmatic. However, I took a look inside the game program and there appears to be a map of Medieval France somewhere. It has some numbers written on the margin. If we can locate this object maybe these cryptic comments in the diary will start to make more sense.

Well, actually I've already hacked the disk and found the code used on the buttons are BFGIL. Now how I was supposed to get that, I don't know. Those numbers on the map also seem useless for navigating the mist, but, I navigated the mist anyway, and found a combination lock that the numbers aren't useful to either. I had to hack the disk for that combination also. Now that I've run out of hacks, I don't know what I'm supposed to do next.

Where are these buttons found?

I had been able to figure out one number of the combination lock. See, one of those notes that crumble and disappear after you read them says that one of the characters is a quarter of a century old, that's 25, so I suspected that's how you were supposed to guess these numbers for the lock. But the other notes I found (8 so far) are not very enlightening in this regard, so I was forced to "cheat" and take a look at the combination number from inside the game program. I opened the stable's lock, got the shovel and then, after some tedious mapping of the "mist maze", I found a wooden chest ("256
Chestinfield Road", get it?) I am currently at 72% score.
Did you figure out what those 6 numbered doors upstairs from the large hallway are for? You can knock on them, but you can't enter or go through them (at least not with the usual commands.)

Never mind, I just found the map, the key and the cookbook. Somehow I had missed the library!

Game over!
I got 92% score. I suppose the remaining 8%, or part of it, has to do with those numbered doors that I couldn't figure out what they are for.
I will write a walkthrough. I will include you, Angus, since you provided important information for finishing the game.

Ok, so where do I find the chest?
You can enter those numbered doors (I didn't know you could knock though!) Try "ENTER ONE, TWO, THREE..." etc. I only found something in #5, but I don't remember what. It was probably just a scrap of useless paper.
Last time I died I was at 84%

From the stable, go:
12 E
9 N
8 W
3 S
5 E
4 S
1 W
You might need to have the cart with you to be able to carry the chest (I did not try getting it without the cart, but I suspect you won't be able to carry the chest without it.)

OK, got it. Now I have finished the game with 96%. What could the remaining 4% be? There is a message within the game program that says one of the paintings is already slightly ajar, revealing an empty compartment. I do not remember getting this message when dealing with any of the paintings I found.

That's not it. You find that when you go into the King's bedroom. Maybe you didn't read the right page in the cookbook. Now which page do you think you should read? I haven't found anything in the game that should tell you it's page 45

I tried reading page 45 but it says there is nothing but recipes. I found a note on page 70, but that's part of the 96%.

Correction, make it:

1 W

That's not it either. When I took my 3rd step to the south before taking 1 step to the west I fell into a pit

Seems that it's using base 5 rather than base 10 (decimal) for counting, is that of any help?
