Scoop - Speccy game - Helplessly stuck

#1 Post by sharkus »

Hello all,
A long time ago I remember playing this game (at least it had the same name and probably the same plot) on a 480z at school, ah those heady days. Anyway I've found it for the Speccy (search on world of spectrum for scoop and you'll find it) but I'm a tad stuck on the first screen, I know, very poor.

I've got the money from the small tin in the bedside cabinets, I've also got and am wearing the clothes from the drawers and the suite and shoes from the wardrobe but now what? I've tried the general direction command (n, e, s, w, u, d, l, and r) and it says I cannot go in that direction.

Any help gratefully appreciated.

I haven't played this game, but will do so if you don't mind.

Try LEAVE ROOM.

Thank you very much indeed! "Leave room" worked! Now I feel very silly not thinking to try that.

I now have a razor, soap and toothbrush and I've cleaned my teeth, but I am unable to have a shave or wash, any clues as to what to do? If I say "use soap to wash" it responds with "you'll have to be more specific". I have made the kids laugh and the wife faint with shock at my nakedness, so I'm progressing :D (I know and have worn the clothes from the bedroom, but once I found the bathroom I thought a wash was in order, seems it's harder than in real life :D)

Hi Sharkus,

welcome to CASA...

Now seeing Terri gave you a direct input I will do the same -

In the bathroom with the razor in your inventory TAKE SHAVE

sounds a bit daft but it works.

Terri & Doreen,
Thank you very much. Direct input always appreciated :) it seems "bang head against wall" doesn't elicit a favorable response either :D

Once again thank you.

Being somewhat extra cheeky, I don't suppose there are any applications out there that would read the .tzx file and somehow extract the textual contents, ok, cheating I know, which one does not condone, but I'd be curious to see what other quirks of vocabulary are used.

Well, I'm progressing a small amount at a time :) I think I'm going to try and write a little walkthrough of this game, if only so I can remember what I've done to achieve certain tasks.

It's always a good idea to write up what you have done and also try to make a map of where you have been. Make notes in your loc descriptions what items are there etc.

As to looking at the text contents - try opening the file in 'wordpad' - you might see something - but it doesn't always work.

I'll try the wordpad thing, thanks.

I've got a brief map of some of the locations, am just working on the dreaded wood at the moment, one of those lovely maze type areas.

Am back again :D

I don't suppose someone could tell me how to get the car started, or at least exit the garage once I'm in there :D

Yes, tis I! :D Well a bit of googling led me to a little utility call unquill. I saved the .tzx file as a .sna and then used unquill to export the game and I've got a list of data from it. It certainly shows commands that need to be entered and the conditions on how they will respond. I've not had a complete look through the file but I suspect it's got all the info needed to complete the game in there.

You know, I'm not sure how one could work this out with no manual or command list! Yes, I'm cheating a tad and have looked at the unquilled document from scoop. When in the garage you need to "unlock boot" and you'll find a bike in the boot and with the screwdriver you can assemble it. You then wear the bicycle clips and you can get out of the garage! yay!

Well, seeing as the weather here has been rather evil, I thought I'd try and complete the walkthrough, and I think I've done it :) I'm not sure on the etiquette of where to post it on here, so if someone wishes to advise I'd appreciate it. Plus if you want to run through it and check it's ok that would also be welcomed.

I've finished it too.

I suggest you double check your solution by playing the game again after you've typed it. It's easy to forget a command, or leave a little thing out.

There is no etiquette to posting. Type in any format you use, save it as a .txt file in Courier 10.

Jacob asks that you add the following at the bottom:

Then send it to him.

Thank you Terri. I've just played it through fixing up a few mistakes and on the final run it seems to work perfectly for me.

I'll send it to Jacob
