I think I played this one a while back and got stuck not too long after starting - couldn't get past the knight, lion, or horde of rats as I recall...
that's why...

I too couldn't get past the knight, but I may have gotten past the rats. Hence, why I need more people to get through this one.

I managed to get past the rats this afternoon, and found myself before a door I can't seem to do anything with/to. I also haven't figured out how to: get the scroll from the spikes in the pit, do anything with the bed (which should collapse under some weight), make use of the 'dispell magic' spell, deal with the knight & lion, or devine the meaning of the fossil with a red number 17.
I kinda like this game, although I don't know why.

Yes, this game is interesting, but it is one tough nut to crack.
Try LAY ON BED. The object found there will help at the spikes. This parser recognizes more than two word combinations.
Have you tried HELP at various locations?
You can LIGHT FLASK. then one more unusual command, and you will be where I am.

re: trying HELP. Yes I have, but when the game responds with "look at clue no.xx" I don't know how to do that
Geez, I really need to work on my grammar. I kept trying LIE ON BED.
Okay, got the object from the spikes, had already chased the rats away with a flaming flask, so off to discover the unusual command.
Thanks for all the help!

Out of interest I loaded part 2. (you are told to load it soon after the rats and the door).
It seems that you will need to have many more objects to begin part 2.
So, until we figure out what to do with the knight and the bear, I feel we are stuck.
I have tried every verb I can think of to "read" the clues, but no go.
So other than help from someone who can determine the clues, or the verbs, or what to do in these locations, I don't think we can go much farther.

Do you suppose the clues came in the docs with the original game? Hmmm, so we need to get past the bear and the knight before attempting part 2? We must be missing something obvious.
Now, how did you get past that door?

This was a lucky shot and it worked: FEEL DESPAIR.
I suppose we can try verb after verb after verb at the bear and the knight, but I am about "verb-ed" out.

Nice to know you are an "outdoors" girl

.
Got through the rest of part 1. Now on to part 2 and the challenges there.

Speaking of part 2...at the end of part 1 the game prompted me to save my game to tape, which I did. However, after starting part 2 I can't figure out how to load that save (since it is, I'm guessing, saved on the part 1 file and I'm now running the part 2 file). Being unable to do that, I simply started playing the part 2 file, but it seems to be missing something that I had at the end of part 1 - the Staff of Angles. What have I done wrong?
Part 2 may be a bit buggy - for example, in a desperate attempt to do something to the chandelier I started hurling everything I had at it - after trying "THROW JAR" the game responded with something about a guard taking the jar and eating it's contents, giving me a chance to escape. Useful information for later on I'm sure, but not really appropriate in the entrance hall me thinks.
jeez...

And I had checked and double-checked and thought I had all the objects. Drat!
I don't know what else to do with the staff, as you get all the way to the end of part 1 with it. It says it is useless unless combined with three other objects - not sure which ones.
I too had that problem with part 2, but I just said "female" and it let me continue, so I did. I was able (with difficulty) to load part 2 games using another emulator, and don't know how to do this with Spectaculator. So let's go for broke and see what we can do with part 2. It's not that long of a game so I won't be dreadfully frustrated if I need to go back to the beginning.
Have not yet fully explored this part and won't be able to for a couple of days (suddenly busy social calendar). Also tried throwing things at the chandelier. And getting nowhere. Also cannot seem to tie the rope to the stairs.
Time for another one of your insights, like PLAY DEAD. I really liked that, Amby.
Do you notice how we seem to be playing this alone? What do you sepculate has happened to the others? Busy with holiday stuff, or are they leaving us out to hang ourselves???

Hi All.
Try these hints.........
As Female -
lasso statue
Give jar to cook
give coin to guard
give bottle to guard
pick lock at portcullis
open sesame
seduce guard!
choose prime numbers
cast thunderball spell (fire demon)
say 1547
multiply 7x17x13..............
good luck

SEDUCE GUARD? Now that one would have taken me a while to come up with (although in retrospect it doesn't seem completely off the wall). Thanks!
Finished part 2. Of course, I can't figure out how to go back to part 1 to see the whole ending (just like I couldn't carry forward my save from part 1 to part 2).
Thanks again Doreen.
coin?

Where do you get the coin to give to the guard? I've checked each of the four servants' rooms? And the polished table? Can't use the key either.
