M25!

#1 Post by Gunness » Fri Feb 10, 2012 8:52 am

I'm not sure if M25 qualifies as an adventure, if the whole point is just going in one direction all the time?

Looking at the description, the screenshot and the solution, I'd say "Adventure" is by far the best genre classification you can give to this piece of software (under the premise of calling it a game). The player is presented with a location description and a command prompt. Inputs are passed to and interpreted by a parser. That parser produces a reply. What more would you expect of an "Adventure"? My vote is to keep it.

You can choose your direction, it doesn't have to be the same every time.
Not that it makes any difference...

Also there is an entry somewhere with the solution 'UP'. Ptbad or somesuch?

We talked about Hunt the Wumpus in the admin thread, where it was decided not to include it.
Another game which largely fits your description is Everest Ascent, although it doesn't include a parser (but we have several multiple choice games in our database which I think are suitably adventure-like). E.A. is more like a simulation, I'd say?

Anyway, I'll create a separate thread and we'll take the debate from there :)

As far as I'm concerned M25! is intended as a joke adventure, it's not a very good joke but it still qualifies as a text adventure.

I think that's a good point – the intention and the intended target audience.

Good point. It's a keeper! And yes, it's a lousy joke.
As promised, I've set up a general thread about the topic. Hope you'll want to weigh in with your opinions :)

Should joke adventures, such as M25!, have their own genre, e.g. "Joke", so that anyone who does not want to play a (usually lame) joke game know which games to avoid?

How many games of this type do we have? Off the top of my sleepy head I can't come up with any other ones. Then again, I am sleepy :)

Naufragio for the Amstrad seems to be a hoax as well. There is no way to escape the island and if you survive the other traps you ultimately will die from starvation because you run out of food.

In the so-called "modern" era, countless joke games have been released. Though only few of them are on CASA and the line is admittedly blurry.

I don't mind adding the genre tag (done already), but I'm not sure I'd know when to apply it. Is a game like Conan Kill Everything a "joke" game? Sure, it's pretty much a one-trick pony, (= a joke) but it's fun and has a few genuine puzzles, which might take it more into straight parody territory.

I don't know as I haven't (yet) played it, but is it a joke at the expense of text adventures or is it making fun of "kill everything" movies?
