Possible solution problem - Cup, The

#1 Post by hackersanon » Thu Aug 20, 2020 12:56 am

RZX Adventurer:

"This solution may not be for the Spectrum version

The map seems to be different (larger) from the one in the solution, as I constantly had to do many extra moves to find the correct locations.

EXAM FURS does not pick up a fur as claimed -- you have to SEARCH FURS, GET FUR.

By trial and error I got as far as EXAM STONE (the Blarney stone) but then couldn't find the location where I should EXAM SOIL."

Which Spectrum version is the person trying to play, Gerard?

There are at least two distinct ones... an earlier Quilled version and the later PAWed version.

I couldn't begin to tell you, I'm afraid. I'm just a boy. Standing here telling someone that someone else can't use a complete solution.
(Is it raining? Use brolly. Ed)

Well, if he can identify which version he is playing we can probably help more.

I'm a silly sod.. I meant to add "I'll ask them for specifics - thanks!" after my Andie MacDowell impersonation.
I got too carried away dancing like Hugh Grant (A. wrong film, you cretin. B. You dance more like Hugh Hefner does nowadays. Ed)

I'm pretty sure he's playing the PAWed version. All the solutions I've seen are for the Quilled versions. I don't think they're that different but he will have to do some work to apply the knowledge from the earlier game.

Hi. I was using the TZX file available here:
https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/entry/6 ... um/The_Cup
called "CupThe(ZenobiSoftware).tzx.zip".
I favour Zenobi re-releases when there is a choice (since they've had a chance to fix bugs and generally tidy up annoyances), and obviously TZX is preferable to Z80.
The linked page only mentions PAW, not Quill.

Not all the entries there are correct. I've submitted corrections for the Jack Lockerby/River Software games; many of which appeared as Quilled games first.

The C64 versions were also Quilled (produced at the same time as the original Spectrum ones) and the solutions here are often C64 ones.

Okay, since I started trying to record RZX solutions to these (mostly 90s/Zenobi-era) adventures it has become apparent how many versions there are, not necessarily between platforms (Speccy, C64 etc.) but just different versions on the same platform.
I suppose the lesson here is that anyone writing a solution should indicate exactly what version they are using (but I'm not sure how well that would work either -- if I put "it's the one I got from John Wilson in 1989" how are we gonna tie that -- oh never mind)

Anyway I gather you are G.P. who wrote some of these games. In which case let me say that I really enjoyed "Man About the House".
