This is the virtual machine format developed and used by Infocom. This ensured maximum portability as only the virtual machine had to be ported to each host platform instead of every individual game. Many modern day compilers, including the popular Inform, can compile Z-Machine compatible files. More information: http://ifwiki.org/index.php/Z-machine.
