Explorer was an Italian magazine. Its adventure games usually featured recurring characters. The name of the character was used to create series of games of particular genres (fantasy, sci-fi, horror, western...) and this was helpful to retain players who loved that character. Every game was introduced in the magazine by a short story with the character and very important information about the puzzles, like a password, a magic word or a code name. In this way the publishers dissuaded the use of pirated tapes without the original magazine.
Some of the more popular characters:
- Dick Ironside was a policeman, used for action stories
- Nigel Stevenson was a young man catapulted by a magic flower into a world of fantasy, with elves, evil wizards, gnomes, princesses, dragons, trolls...
- Roger Barrow was a secret agent specializing in UFO investigation
- Frank Russell was the survivor of an air raid during a war and he was protagonist of action stories
- Yarkho was a magician, protagonist of adventures similar to Enchanter
- Terry Jones was an Indiana Jones-type archaeologist, and he would search for treasure in exotic lands and mysterious ruins
- Morgan Tyler was a starship trooper, sometimes shipwrecked on hostile planets, sometimes in charge of saving a starship from an alien plague or fighting off a robot invasion
