As penance for killing his own family (done in a moment of pure weakness and something he would never he able to forgive himself for) HERCULES is forced to undertake twelve hazardous "labours" - all of which must be completed in order that he regain his freedom and be allowed to walk abroad again. Each task, in its own right, was considered to be all but impossible for a mere mortal, but taken as a collection of twelve their "challenge" appeared to be beyond even the ability of a "god". However, this was the task before HERCULES and success his only salvation. Anything short of complete victory would condemn him to a fate worse than death and would do nothing to ease his heartache over his departed family.
