Snowflakes whirl out of the night, blazing over the hood like tiny white comets. Then the blinding headlights of a large truck pierce the darkness ahead, and you dip your own lights in response. The truck thunders by, the wind buffeting your car. You slow, tug the steering column lever to bring back the high beams, and it comes off in your hands with a terrible snap.
Panic. You stare through the windshield. Nothing. No light. Solid black rushing towards you.
A second later, and a jarring crunch. Then a lurch, and you're thrown forward.
Silence. The engine has stopped. The windshield wipers, motionless. A sharp line of pain across your chest, tracing the seatbelt strap. You turn the ignition key. Nothing.
