In the late 1700s, an old English ship carrying jewels and gold was seized by pirates in a violent storm. The crew, weak and sick from the long journey, could not defend the ship and her valuable cargo. The pirates killed everyone on board and set sail for America.
Months later, the pirates arrived off the coast of a New England peninsula and smuggled the priceless gold ashore. According to legend, no one ever found the smugglers or the treasure, but most people believe the gold is located in or near the lighthouse. Over the years, many have tried unsuccessfully to find the legendary gold, but either quit, or died in the quest. Can you find it?
This was originally written by Chris Wilkinson and published by Falsoft in 1982 as a BASIC type-in listing for the CoCo in The Rainbow book of adventures, pp. 22–28.
There is a port of the game for C64 by Nathan Butcher.
A version of the game was ported to the Coleco Adam by N J Lowe, then embellished by Bob Zimmerman and published by Northern Illiana ADAM Users.
ADAMagic released the game for the Coleco Adam in 1985 as 'A Montauk Mystery', probably based on the Lowe-Zimmerman version. It was included on their 'Adventure Pack 3' compilation without any credits to the original author.
Jim Gerrie has created a version of the original game for the TRS-80 MC-10.
The original game was ported to BBC Micro in 2018; it can be played online and also downloaded here.
