I managed to decode the message in the lab book unaided. Maybe I should have been a spy.
This type of detective game with many NPCs is very difficult to code accurately. For instance, near the start you can lead Edward to Malcolm's rooms and have him stand directly outside the door. When the two triggered NPCs arrive Edward apparently doesn't notice them nor hear anything that they are saying. I know he is preoccupied by his parrot but they cannot fail to have walked past him.
