Synopsis

As RICK HANSON, special agent, you find yourself in a disused railway station at the start of another secret mission. What the mission is, you do not know, but you are sure it must be important because the Chief has assigned you to the case!

Notes

Originally produced for BBC/Electron. Programming by Robert O'Leary.

Rick Hanson was also released for Amstrad and Atari XL/XE.

The Atari XL/XE version was programmed by Nick Gregory, using an enhanced version of his Slave adventure system. It included extra puzzles and items.

The Amstrad version also included more puzzles and ten extra locations. It received a negative review in Amstrad Action issue 24, which prompted Robico to write in and complain. (See Amstrad Action issue 27, page 79)

I'd previously played other Robico titles but not the Rick Hanson trilogy. I thought I'd give it a go and tried the first game of the trilogy (which is the only one ported to the Atari 400/800) via Altirra 4.30. The writing is evocative and matches my previous Robico experiences in terms of all-round quality.

It appears to be a very tough offering; the opening section plays like an Andy Phillips game where you are being tracked by a couple of hitmen and need to work out how to escape the railway station where the game starts without being rubbed out. Achieving this and taking all objects that you find is head-bangingly tricky.

This game is extremely large (I don't know how much bigger than the Robico original it is) but there isn't much to actually interact with so far. I have mapped 118 locations and only really solved three puzzles. There are very few items to magpie away as well so much of the game has been spent wandering idly around without any motivation or apparent goal.

I have just worked out how to cross the river but there is no way back and I am wondering if I have missed anything; the game could do with more linearity.
