You, Inspector Claude la Mort of the Surete, have been assigned to the P.U. Plum murder case. You are at the scene of the crime, the Calhoon Museum. It is August 17th, 1963.
The original C64 version of the game was written in 1984. A news article from the time mentions that Fender was selling copies through local business outlets.
It's better known commercial release for C64 was in 1987; when it appeared on Loadstar issue 44.
The game seems to have been ported to MS-DOS in 1988 when it was included on Softdisk's Big Blue disk.
The game made another appearance on Loadstar, issue 159 in 1997. This C64 version is presented as Fender Tucker's annotation of Knees Calhoon's Murder in the Museum. In this version when you press F1 you get some additional information and clues about the current room. The author recommends this release as the version of the game to play.
(*Knees Calhoon was a regularly used alias of Fender Tucker; the editor of Loadstar)
Fender writes about Murder in the Museum (and the sequel) here on his blog. He mentions that he started writing it on the Vic-20, but ran out of memory. His blog post also includes a scan of the Loadstar cover picture where he dressed up as Inspector Claude la Mort!
