You play the part of a 59-year-old clergyman whose health and spirits had been in decline for the past few months. Your doctor had suggested a change of scenery and your sister Emma had convinced you of the necessity of such a trip.
As a result, you have just completed a month's sojourn in the French Alps. It improved your health tremendously, but did little to raise your spirits.
It is now the early Autumn of 1886 and you are on your journey home. You have stopped at a small French coastal village prior to your final crossing of the English Channel. Your trunk has been transferred from the train to the pier where the boatman is waiting. And then, from the corner of your eye, you saw her. Like an angel descended from heaven, she stood on the cobbles at the other end of the pier...
