THE SHRINKING PROFESSOR’S QUEST
In this homage to classic movies such as The Incredible Shrinking Man, you
have inhaled some poisonous gas which has caused you to shrink to a size of
about one inch. Your quest, such as it is, is to find some crystals that will
help you regain your former size.
The vocabulary and parser are both quite simply – fortunately, the puzzles
aren’t too taxing.
(You begin in a dimly lit cellar) W, W, W, N, GET POWDER, S, W, U, E, THROW
POWDER (the DDT powder kills the spider), GET SPIDER, W, W, W, IN, GET
NEEDLE, OUT, E, E, D, Ex5, GET SHELL, S, U, PULL STRING (even through your
can’t see it), RIGHT, LOWER STRING, D
River area: E, E (you fall into the river but are able to use the shell as a
boat), S, S, E, N, N, LOOK (until it’s safe to cross the road), N, W, N, GET
HONEY, S, E, LOOK (until it’s safe to cross the road), S, S, S, W, S (into
the vole’s hole), W (keep going until you wind up in the compost heap – where
you contract a disease)
Garden area: N, N, E, S, W, WASH (using the water from the waterfall, you
wash away the disease), W, THROW SPIDER (the frog falls asleep), S, E (keep
moving E until you reach the small chamber), GET METAL, W, N (until you reach
the cave), E, E, N, W, S, Ex5 (you keep slipping on the snail slime but
eventually you make it through), THROW HONEY (this distracts the ants), E
(until you reach the queen ant), STAB QUEEN (with the metal), GET QUEEN, GET
COTTON, THREAD NEEDLE (this leaves you with “a needle and cotton”), W (until
you reach the lovely garden)
Laboratory finale: N, U, E, E, E (a bird attacks you but settles for the dead
queen ant), IN (into the lab), TIE COTTON (to the pin), THROW NEEDLE AND
COTTON (the cotton now spans the gap, so that you may reach the table), N,
GET PHIAL, THROW PHIAL (it shatters, leaving the crystals), GET CRYSTALS, EAT
CRYSTALS
Hints:
In the vole’s nest, keep moving E until you find the brass tack, then keep
moving W until you get out again. Then again, you don’t really need it.
The fingernail, screw, feather, silver paper and shirt button are all useless
as well.
