You are Quick-Lizard, a young Aztec coppersmith, who has had a strange
dream of the sun showering copper onto the people of your village. In
this dream rain clouds come and drown the sun. Waking from the dream
Quick-Lizard wandered into the forest and watched the moon set, but the
sun did not rise to start the new day. Rushing back to the village you
find no one there except Hwee-Tsee, a humming bird sent to help you in
our quest to find the sun. He tells you that the villagers have been
captured by the condors and taken east. The game starts here.
GENERAL HINTS and SUGGESTIONS
1. In this game you move with the number keys:
1 – turn left
2 – move forward
3 – turn right
4 – leave behind…(pressing the space bar will highlight each object on
the right screen as well as show the word. Press <ENTER> to drop the
object.
5 – bring along…(pressing the space bar followed by <ENTER> will allow
you to take that object. If there is more than one object present, keep
pressing the space bar to see each in turn
6 – eat or drink (as above though there is no need to use this command)
7 – use (same "scrolling" process as above. Press <ENTER> to choose the
object you want
to use)
8 – say spell… type the name of the spell.
2. There is no way of knowing the spells from the symbols given to you
during the game. Possibly they came with the original documentation of
the game. If you wish to complete the game, you need the names of the
spells in this walkthrough.
3. Map each new section before actually playing the game. The game is
laid out in a grid pattern. Note who and what you see in the squares so
you can find them more quickly later. Be aware that the square you see
in front of you is the square you are standing on. The compass always
points north, so as you turn left and right, the compass adjusts to show
which way is north. While the puzzles themselves are not difficult, many
objects need to be collected first before solving them. The mapping can
be tedious.
4. There are several versions of this game available on various sites.
It has a part 1 and a part 2. If you are playing it on a Spectrum
emulator, make sure you have the large (95KB) version. Set your emulator
to play a 48K game, as otherwise the .tap file will not load. When it
asks you to load part 2, be patient, press <ENTER> or the space bar, and
part 2 will load automatically.
THE DESERTED VILLAGE
1. Visit the old man, who gives you some helpful information about
travelling in disguise, either as a merchant with a llama or as a priest
or a soldier. He also tells you that the villagers are prisoners in the
Aztec City. You know that he is looking for something. You see that his
hands are burnt.
2. Collect three cobs of maize, needed to feed to the llama. They are in
the southwest part.
3. Deposit three cobs of maize at the llama. Now you can bring the llama
along with you.
4. Collect the copper pot, which will be used by the village blacksmith.
It is too heavy to bring along without the help of the llama. The jade
statue of Tlalac is not required.
5. Collect the bone key.
6. Bring along the stone knife, which has a skull-shaped shaft and is
needed in both the temple and Condor City. Proceed to the next location
which is the river valley.
THE RIVER VALLEY
7. Open the gate using the key and collect the fawn which has been
caught by a hunter and wants to be taken to its mother across the river.
In returning to the path again use the key and then leave the key
behind.
8. Travel along the path and follow it to the site of the river crossing
where the bridge has been washed away. The river is shallow just before
the bridge site, and may be forded there. However the llama does not
like getting its feet wet and so leave it just west of the bridge, and
of course the copper pot, before crossing the river. Only attempt to
cross at this shallow place as piranhas infest the waters elsewhere,
with fatal results.
9. Having crossed the river you dislodge a fallen tree which floats,
carrying you to the site of the bridge where it becomes lodged in the
struts of the old broken bridge, and so serves as a new and temporary
bridge.
10. Cross the bridge and retrieve both the llama and the copper pot
before recrossing to find the doe.
11. Return the fawn to its mother and in return you receive the mark of
Nawax, the all-seer, and every animal will know you as a friend. The
tiger god strokes your face with his claws and the blood forms the sign
of the sun on your cheeks. He says you have made good the evil of your
relatives the hunters. Continue along the path, and enter the Aztec
city.
THE AZTEC CITY
12. Visit the dog who gives you væ as part of a spell, to let you into
the temple in the valley. He tells you to visit the cat for the rest of
the spell. They have split up the spell in case one of them is captured,
so the condors won't be able to use the spell.
13. Visit the cat who tells you to go to the temple in the river valley
and collect the black lotus, which brings sleepiness and gives you the
rest of the spell needed to enter. He says that C is part of it. If the
nearby blacksmith's forge (at the extreme west) is visited then it is
found to be deserted, but there is no need to visit it at this moment.
14. Return to the river valley, cross the bridge and continue to the
temple. Say spell PAYNAL to enter the temple. You are automatically
placed inside.
THE TEMPLE IN THE RIVER VALLEY
15. Use the stone knife to cut the webs, (northwest corner) which
surround Patecat, who you now free. He tells you to say a god's name in
front of a mirror. The mirror also summons a god if you carry his totem.
16. Collect the potion, taking care not to enter the squares in which
the lotus plant is, else you fall asleep.
17. Visit the mirror (south end). Say QUETZAL and the clue Fpß appears.,
as the spell needed to leave the temple. The names of the other gods can
be recited, to supply information about them. Say PATECAT, NAWAX, TOPEC,
HUITZE, TLALAC, LAZOL, but there is no need to do this. If you say
MICLAN and hold the stone knife then this god of death appears, takes
your knife, and that is the end of you. Without holding the knife it is
safe to utter his name.
18. Go to the square reached when you came in and say the spell
TONANTZIN. The temple walls open to let you back into the valley. Now
return to the Aztec city.
RETURN TO AZTEC CITY
19. Use the sleeping potion to drug the condor who is guarding the
prisoners. Be quick, or else you are caught.
20. Release the villagers (more or less in the centre of this area), who
tell you that you have to brave the heights of Condor Mountain if you
are to find the sun. There is a tunnel in the north wall of the city. To
open it you must say the spell Cbà.
21. Visit the blacksmith, who is there now that the villagers have been
freed. Leave behind the copper pot, which he beats into a shield.
Remember to bring it along when he has finished.
22. The lizard who is nearby tells you that in the temple of Knowledge
you will need to search for a stone tablet.
23. Go to the city wall and say the spell IXCUINA. The tunnel appears,
but you cannot go through it if you still have the llama. If it is with
you then leave it behind, and repeat the spell.
Now load the data for Part Two from side B of the cassette.
THE RAIN FOREST
24. On the path a wounded condor requests that you help him by bringing
the snake vine to cure his broken wing. As the snake vine is guarded by
a snake you have to go to the burnt forest to bring an eagle along to
get rid of the snake.
THE BURNT FOREST
25. Follow the path into the burnt forest and collect a thorn.
26. Keep within two squares of the edge of this area and go to the
eagle. It says it is hungry and asks for a bite to eat. Bring it along.
27. Whilst in this burnt forest collect a bamboo pipe, again keeping
within two squares of the edge. For future reference visit the altar in
the adjacent square. Chipped into the stone is a clue, which reads
"Music from the sea. A feather of power. Scatter the seed to call a
flower." These items have to be collected from the Temple of Knowledge
situated within the rain forest.
RETURN TO THE RAIN FOREST
28. Go to the snake and drop the eagle, who finds his dinner!
29. Collect the snake vine and take it to the wounded condor. He is
cured and flies off, perhaps to warn the others that you are in the
forest! His apparent ungratefulness is resolved at the end of the
adventure.
30. Enter the Temple of Knowledge, past Quetzal, the guardian of the
temple. He says that he who refuses to help another will die unhelped,
and he that helps will in the end be helped. Collect both the seed and
the feather.
31. Go to the scorpion which blocks the entrance south and use the
bamboo pipe. The poisonous thorn kills the scorpion but there are
thousands of its children!
32. Bring along the tablet of stone, on which there is a picture of the
sun being freed and a riddle. "I am the red-gold one, Red for the heat I
gather, and gold for the Sun my father. Leave me in the rain and I go
green, And hidden is all my glorious gleam. What am I?" Answer copper.
Perhaps the pot or shield.
33. Also collect the conch shell, which is used by Aztec priests to call
on the gods.
RETURN TO THE BURNT FOREST
34. Make your way to the altar in the burnt forest, keeping to within
two squares of the edge. Leave behind the feather and the seed, and use
the conch shell to call up Zipetopec, the Goddess of Spring. She
scatters feathers from her eagle wings, and trees and flowers grow, and
the burnt forest springs to life! Leave behind the conch shell and the
bamboo pipe. It is now safe to travel anywhere within the forest.
35. Travel into the Condor city, use your shield to protect you from
lightning bolts, but keep the shield as without it more lightning bolts
are hurled at you, later by the volcano vent.
CONDOR CITY
36. Go to Miclan. It is in the centre and can be entered in several
ways. This is the spot where Tlalac and Huitze fought. Miclan asks
whether you have come to steal what they left behind. Leave behind the
stone knife which is accepted as a peace offering.
37. Collect both the jewelled mask and the golden tear.
38. Visit the coyote, who says when Tlalac, the God of Rain and the Sun
God Huitze fought the altar split in two. He could help you, but must
sit on guard until the altar is repaired.
39. Travel to the broken altar and leave behind the golden tear. This
flows into the middle of the altar, repairing it.
40. Collect the coyote on the way out.
41. Go to the falcon (southeast corner) who thinks you are Tlalac,
because of the jewelled mask. He says your robes are safe. Go past him
and take a robe.
42. Follow the road and travel to the condor. He sees Tlalac's robe and
bows to let you pass, so continue along the path towards Condor
Mountain.
CONDOR MOUNTAIN
43. Collect the herb, which is supposed to waken the sleepiest of
sloths. On the way the condors may attack by throwing rocks at you. If
they do go another way quickly, or play it safe and travel the longer
way to obtain the herb. Leave behind both the mask and the robe, as they
are no longer needed, before taking the herb.
44. Travel to the sleeping sloth, and drop the herb. He wakes up and has
a bite. Bring him along.
45. Follow the path to the dragon (east side), who will not let you
pass. Drop the coyote who nips the dragon on its tail. The dragon chases
after him, leaving free the access to the way north.
46. Continue along the path, and ignore the old man. He wants you to
drop the shield, saying it is sun metal, and that you and he will free
the sun together. Do not believe him! If you give him the shield then
Tlalac hurls a bolt of lightning at you and you fail.
47. At the bridge strong winds buffet you, but the sloth carries you
under the bridge, away from the winds. Leave him behind.
48. Go to Nawax, who says Friend we meet again. He advises you to read
the tablet and Ah (right diagonal arrow) appears. Nawax says you must
speak this name when the earth moves.
49. Move to the earthquake (northwest corner) and say spell CHANTICO.
The old mother god of the earth Lazol stops the earthquake but advises
you to go on quickly.
50. Move forward to the volcano vent. Hwee-Tsee tells you to save your
people you must throw yourself into the volcano. Ignore the old man
having a last try to obtain the shield. He is the storm god Tlalac who
says (if you do give him the shield) that it was the last of the copper
that the sun gave to your people. The condors were too stupid to find
it. As you throw yourself forward into the vent the wounded condor you
helped earlier snatches you in mid-flight. The copper shield falls into
the lava with a brilliant flash which lights up the sky from east to
west. The sun climbs up in a brilliant dawn. Hwee-Tsee thanks you for
saving him and will bless your village and people for ever more. Tlalac
and his thunderclouds will be banished and you shall live in peace.
