Swap Wand User (swap-wand-user.txt)

Walkthrough for Swap Wand User by Sarah Willson.

Walkthrough by Andrew Schultz blurglecruncheon@gmail.com

All commands are of the form SWAP WORD1 WORD2. I could list the commands, but that wouldn't be
much fun. I won't spoil what certain things mean, either, but you can guess. I thought the
process to get through Swap Wand User was interesting enough, I would spell it out. I'm also
amused by how some of the commands make sense no their own, or the combination of words to swap says
something, in its own way. This becomes apparent at the end, where the short sentences *almost* make
sense.

There's no best or right way to go through, and there's no reward for a speedrun or
punishment for backtracking, etc., but I think the reasoning below shows a decent enough combination
of intuition (how do sentences read, especially given their context?) and logic to say that, yes,
this is definitely a very fair and rewardingly challenging game.

There are seven puzzles in the game proper, then there is denouement. They are always shuffled the
same way, so a walkthrough can state commands instead of listing out the final sentences. (It's
not trivial to randomize it so everything's different.)

The first is trivial, because ... well ...

Lucross Character Transposition Wand User Manual

Requires, well,

>SWAP WAND USER

The title of the game!

Now for the second fragment.

Cross become people Often is and how in Kathleen, forgetting way thinking one reality diverse stuck
of. --flexible truly

This looks like a quotation/epigram. You'll notice something odd here. "Often" and
"Cross" both need to start a sentence, apparently, but there's only one sentence.

Except, well, Cross is a proper name. So...

>SWAP CROSS TRULY
>SWAP OFTEN TRULY
>SWAP KATHLEEN FLEXIBLE

Often become people truly is and how in flexible, forgetting way thinking one reality diverse stuck
of. —Kathleen Cross

You may see the first three letters almost make sense.

>SWAP BECOME PEOPLE

Let's look at truly and stuck. Each has a two-word letter after it. "Stuck is"
doesn't make sense unless "getting" precedes it, and "stuck of"
doesn't sound great either. "Stuck in" if kept at the end needs a seven-letter word
before it, but none really make sense.

>SWAP STUCK TRULY
>SWAP IS IN
>SWAP IS OF

Often people become stuck in and how of flexible, forgetting way thinking one reality diverse truly
is. —Kathleen Cross

A noun must follow flexible, and though there are four words of three letters to place, brute force
can establish "one way of thinking."

>SWAP FLEXIBLE THINKING
>SWAP ONE AND
>SWAP HOW WAY

There's just two words to switch now.

>SWAP DIVERSE REALITY

Often people become stuck in one way of thinking, forgetting how flexible and diverse reality truly
is. —Kathleen Cross

for significantly more subjects Consult not requires. of two exactly Do different subjects to

Sentences must start with capital words.

>SWAP DO OF
>SWAP ATTEMPT CONSULT
>SWAP THE FOR

The significantly more subjects attempt not requires. Do two exactly of different subjects to
compatibility transpose table. Consult transposition sizes for wand information.

"Information" is an orphan here (no other words of length 11,) so what four-letter word
must precede it?

>SWAP WAND MORE

Consult (word) sizes at the end seems wrong.

>SWAP SIZES TABLE

The significantly wand subjects attempt not requires. Do two exactly of different subjects to
compatibility transpose sizes. Consult transposition table for more information.

Significantly has three possible spots, but the first and last sentence don't work.

>SWAP SIGNIFICANTLY COMPATIBILITY

"Subjects" in sentence one could be a verb, but would it subject? Exactly two subjects?

>SWAP SUBJECTS REQUIRES

(The game flips the first subjects, not the second.)

The compatibility wand requires attempt not subjects. Do two exactly of different subjects to
significantly transpose sizes. Consult transposition table for more information.

We can figure the first sentence now.

>SWAP ATTEMPT EXACTLY
>SWAP NOT TWO

The compatibility wand requires exactly two subjects. Do not attempt of different subjects to
significantly transpose sizes. Consult transposition table for more information.

>SWAP OF TO
>SWAP DIFFERENT TRANSPOSE

These three sentences seem like they should work. I actually got tripped up here, until I realized
...

>SWAP COMPATIBILITY TRANSPOSITION

The transposition wand requires exactly two subjects. Do not attempt to transpose subjects of
significantly different sizes. Consult compatibility table for more information.

all sciences between bridges Our always research, revealing facilitate understanding to
intercommunication. broad and, of hope in unimagined Above possibilities natural safety, mind people
precautions social we with.

Okay, we need to capitalize the start of each sentence.

>SWAP ALL OUR
>SWAP ABOVE BROAD

Above (3 letter word) is of course ...

>SWAP AND ALL

"Our sciences" is a bit too grandiose. Then, we have two types of sciences. Clause one
falls quickly.

>SWAP SCIENCES RESEARCH
>SWAP ALWAYS SOCIAL
>SWAP NATURAL BRIDGES

"Our research between" is a bit off...

>SWAP BETWEEN BRIDGES

Our research bridges natural and social sciences, revealing facilitate understanding to
intercommunication. Above all, of hope in unimagined broad possibilities between safety, mind people
precautions always we with.

With only four two-letter words, we can work at how the second sentence starts.

>SWAP OF WE
>SWAP IN TO

What we hope to do can use fixing.

>SWAP UNIMAGINED FACILITATE

Our research bridges natural and social sciences, revealing unimagined understanding in
intercommunication. Above all, we hope to facilitate broad possibilities between safety, mind people
precautions always of with.

Precautions is an orphan, and one word is better before it than people. Also, understanding
doesn't quite fit...

>SWAP PEOPLE SAFETY
>SWAP UNDERSTANDING POSSIBILITIES

Our research bridges natural and social sciences, revealing unimagined possibilities in
intercommunication. Above all, we hope to facilitate broad understanding between people, mind safety
precautions always of with.

"always of with" sticks out as needing fixing.

>SWAP OF IN
<SWAP WITH MIND

Our research bridges natural and social sciences, revealing unimagined possibilities of
intercommunication. Above all, we hope to facilitate broad understanding between people, with safety
precautions always in mind.

On to fragment 5!

their former might of Benjamin as said organization, After cognitive student that research to, a
induce decline, her with are hospitalization our "Allegations Lu was Laboratories."
devastating Hope Cross director years twelve cofounded Lucross who unverified.

Everything except After and Allegations being a name, we know how to start a sentence. Also,
"years twelve" together suggests twelve years, which fit handily in.

>SWAP DEVASTATING ALLEGATIONS
>SWAP AFTER THEIR
>SWAP FORMER TWELVE
>SWAP YEARS MIGHT

After twelve years of Benjamin as said organization, their cognitive student that research to, a
induce decline, her with are hospitalization our "devastating Lu was Laboratories."
Allegations Hope Cross director might former cofounded Lucross who unverified.

Laboratories must be part of a company name, and since there's no capital letter word with
three letters, it needs to be shifted.

>SWAP ORGANIZATION LABORATORIES
>SWAP HOPE SAID

Hmm, Lu + Cross = Lucross. Save that for later. Also, Lu Benjamin/Benjamin Lu can be proper names.
Let's find an 8-2 or 2-8. It can't be in the first sentence, or it wouldn't make
sense.

>SWAP BENJAMIN RESEARCH
>SWAP TO LU

After twelve years of research as Hope Laboratories, their cognitive student that Benjamin Lu, a
induce decline, her with are hospitalization our "devastating to was organization."
Allegations said Cross director might former cofounded Lucross who unverified.

What's in quotations is almost right. We can figure out a few three-letter-word switches from
there.

>SWAP WAS OUR
>SWAP ARE HER
>SWAP WHO ARE
>SWAP SAID WITH

After twelve years of research as Hope Laboratories, their cognitive student that Benjamin Lu, a
induce decline, who said her hospitalization was "devastating to our organization."
Allegations with Cross director might former cofounded Lucross are unverified.

What is Benjamin Lu? The only 6-7 that makes sense is ...

>SWAP INDUCE FORMER
>SWAP DECLINE STUDENT

After twelve years of research as Hope Laboratories, their cognitive decline that Benjamin Lu, a
former student, who said her hospitalization was "devastating to our organization."
Allegations with Cross director might induce cofounded Lucross are unverified.

The final sentence now seems very close.

>SWAP WITH THAT
>SWAP COFOUNDED COGNITIVE
>SWAP DECLINE LUCROSS

After twelve years of research as Hope Laboratories, their cofounded Lucross with Benjamin Lu, a
former student, who said her hospitalization was "devastating to our organization."
Allegations that Cross director might induce cognitive decline are unverified.

Just one more tweak ...

>SWAP THEIR CROSS
> SWAP RESEARCH DIRECTOR
>SWAP AS OF

After twelve years as director of Hope Laboratories, Cross cofounded Lucross with Benjamin Lu, a
former student, who said her hospitalization was "devastating to our organization."
Allegations that their research might induce cognitive decline are unverified.

Now a police report for fragment 6.

lost home regarding confirmed 39 patient officers person disoriented. Claimed at Arrived Medibridge
in acting Cross, and as. vehicle car owner age got the she with elderly Call. owned Hospital from
After, customer Supermart unidentified Vivian an speaking Brown, a driving to registered Kathleen.

The 39 is odd. What does it go with on a police report? "Age." So we look for 3-2. Also,
sentence starting stuff, but the seven-letter words are odd. There are four of them, but two are
capitalized. Leave them for later.

>SWAP CALL LOST
>SWAP OWNED AFTER
>SWAP 39 AS
>SWAP AND AGE

Vivian Brown seems to be a new name, and it fits in the 6-5 before age 39 nicely. Then
"in" doesn't work before the name.

>SWAP VIVIAN ACTING
>SWAP BROWN CROSS
>SWAP AS IN

Call home regarding confirmed in patient officers person disoriented. Claimed at Arrived Medibridge
as Vivian Brown, age 39. vehicle car owner and got the she with elderly lost. After Hospital from
owned, customer Supermart unidentified acting an speaking Cross, a driving to registered Kathleen.

"Call home regarding" is good English, but this is a police report.

>SWAP FROM HOME

And what nine-word letter is it from?

>SWAP REGARDING SUPERMART
>SWAP CONFIRMED REGARDING
>SWAP IN AN

Call from Supermart regarding an patient officers person disoriented. Claimed at Arrived Medibridge
as Vivian Brown, age 39. vehicle car owner and got the she with elderly lost. After Hospital home
owned, customer confirmed unidentified acting in speaking Cross, a driving to registered Kathleen.

And now we need a seven-letter word beginning with a vowel.

>SWAP ELDERLY PATIENT

What's an eight-word noun you find in a Supermart?

>SWAP CUSTOMER OFFICERS
>SWAP PERSON ACTING

There is very likely an 8-5 for Kathleen Cross.

>SWAP KATHLEEN SPEAKING
>SWAP AS IN

Call from Supermart regarding an elderly customer acting disoriented. Claimed at Arrived Medibridge
in Vivian Brown, age 39. vehicle car owner and got the she with patient lost. After Hospital home
owned, officers confirmed unidentified person as Kathleen Cross, a driving to registered speaking.

Hospital suggests a sort of company with a name. Medibridge sounds like one, and they fit at the
end.

>SWAP REGISTERED MEDIBRIDGE
>SWAP HOSPITAL SPEAKING

And now the final clause makes sense. A hospital is a big building with lots of doctors and
patients, as Frank Drebin will tell you, but that's actually important right now this time.

>SWAP DRIVING PATIENT
>SWAP TO AT

Call from Supermart regarding an elderly customer acting disoriented. Claimed to Arrived registered
in Vivian Brown, age 39. vehicle car owner and got the she with driving lost. After speaking home
owned, officers confirmed unidentified person as Kathleen Cross, a patient at Medibridge Hospital.

Now the last sentence can be fixed.

>SWAP HOME WITH
>SWAP OWNED OWNER

That last one amused me, with just one letter flipped.

"Claimed to" also doesn't make sense, and there are no other two-letter words to
adjust, so...

>SWAP CLAIMED ARRIVED
>SWAP CLAIMED VEHICLE
>SWAP IN TO

Call from Supermart regarding an elderly customer acting disoriented. Arrived in vehicle registered
to Vivian Brown, age 39. Claimed car owned and got the she home driving lost. After speaking with
owner, officers confirmed unidentified person as Kathleen Cross, a patient at Medibridge Hospital.

Now only the third sentence. "home driving lost" sticks out a bit. "The" only
seems to fit behind "car."

>SWAP LOST HOME

>SWAP SHE CAR
>SWAP AND THE
>SWAP GOT CAR

On to fragment 7!

of use setting ALL during be subjects. on experimenter ONLY emergency operator by the TIMES revert
transposition should. AT Wand to procedure, NOT used trained In period supervise. UNDO device An
case must DO a operate yourself.

Low-hanging fruit:

>SWAP WAND UNDO

Now we look at the ALL CAPS words. Do any fit together as a phrase? Yes, AT ALL TIMES. That sounds
like it belongs on a warning label! ONLY DO and DO NOT are both still possibilities.

>SWAP BY AT
>SWAP ALL THE

What does the first sentence start with? "In the" has no follow-up. "An" has no
word with a vowel after. So DO looks like a good bet, with NOT as part of the warning.

>SWAP DO OF
>SWAP USE NOT

DO NOT setting the during be subjects. on experimenter ONLY emergency operator AT ALL TIMES revert
transposition should. by UNDO to procedure, use used trained In period supervise. Wand device An
case must of a operate yourself.

The seven-letter word at the start is apparent.

>SWAP OPERATE SETTING

Operate what?

>SWAP DEVICE DURING

How to operate the device?

>SWAP BE BY
>SWAP YOURSELF SUBJECTS

Experimenter must be word 2 of sentence 2, so ...

>SWAP ON AN

DO NOT operate the device by yourself. An experimenter ONLY emergency operator AT ALL TIMES revert
transposition should. be UNDO to procedure, use used trained In period supervise. Wand during on
case must of a setting subjects.

But now the second sentence takes shape!

>SWAP MUST ONLY
>SWAP SUPERVISE EMERGENCY

Transposition is fixed as well.

>SWAP REVERT DURING
>SWAP SHOULD PERIOD

DO NOT operate the device by yourself. An experimenter must supervise operator AT ALL TIMES during
transposition period. be UNDO to procedure, use used trained In should emergency. Wand revert on
case ONLY of a setting subjects.

>SWAP BE IN

The "In" may remind us of a phrase in safety precautions. Plus only one word of length
four really works...

>SWAP UNDO CASE
>SWAP TO OF
>SWAP PROCEDURE EMERGENCY

DO NOT operate the device by yourself. An experimenter must supervise operator AT ALL TIMES during
transposition period. In case of emergency, use used trained be should procedure. Wand revert on
UNDO ONLY to a setting subjects.

Let's make sense of the last sentence.

>SWAP SHOULD REVERT
>SWAP BE ON

"Use used?!"

>SWAP UNDO USED

"On revert?!"

>SWAP ON TO

>SWAP TRAINED SETTING

Oops! One small problem with the last sentence. The first sentence looked good, but ...

>SWAP ON BY

And one more tweak to a sentence that looked good ...

>SWAP OPERATOR SUBJECTS

The rest is denouement.

>SWAP RIGHT WRONG

"myself" and "vivian" doesn't quite work...
