For Atari 400/800/XL/XE
Solution by Garry Francis
----------------------------------------
This is a minimal solution. There is a lot of guess-the-verb, so make sure you read the instructions
carefully. In particular, note that hints are sometimes given in double quotes.
You score 2 points for finding a room and 5 points for finding an object. As there are 20 rooms and
5 objects, the maximum score is (20 x 2) + (5 x 5) = 65. Scores are shown in parentheses as +A=B,
where A is points earned and B is cumulative points earned.
Some optional (but significant) commands are shown in parentheses. These can be omitted once you
know what to do.
(SCORE) (your initial score is 2, as you've just entered a new room)
(READ MAGAZINE) ("Even Scrooge would give an Atari this Christmas")
W (+2=4)
N (+2=6)
N (+2=8)
READ MESSAGE ("Atari user group forming. Call 555-1234 for info")
TAKE MESSAGE (+5=13)
S
S
E
N (+2=15)
(USE PHONE) (what number do you want to dial?)
(555-1234) (meeting of B.A.S.I.C. to be held at 28 Marine Ave, bring your Atari)
LOOK COINS (they're actually subway tokens)
TAKE TOKENS (+5=20)
N (+2=22)
E (+2=24)
(WHAT'S YOUR SPECIAL) (they've got C64 and Atari, but it's 4-8 weeks delivery)
E (sign says "INSERT TOKEN HERE") (+2=26)
(NW) (you can't ride the subway without tokens)
INSERT TOKEN (you can now go northwest)
NW (+2=28)
(BUY COMPUTER) (you have to "PAY THE PRICE")
PAY THE PRICE (salesman takes your money and brings Atari computer)
TAKE ATARI COMPUTER (+5=33)
NW (+2=35)
NW (+2=37)
NE (+2=39)
(SW) (maybe you should "TAKE CAB")
(I GIVE UP) (you can now go southwest again, but you don't need to)
TAKE CAB
(L) (you're back home again)
D (+2=41)
(TAKE KEYS) (you have to examine them first)
EXAMINE KEYS (they're your car keys)
TAKE KEYS (+5=46)
N
W
W
NW (+2=48)
W (+2=50)
(BUY C64) (you have to "HAGGLE WITH SALESMAN" to get a decent price)
HAGGLE WITH SALESMAN (he relents and matches Disharmony's price)
TAKE C64 COMPUTER (+5=55)
E
(NW) (the car is locked)
USE KEYS (door opens, you can now go northwest)
NW (+2=57)
NW (+2=59)
DROP C64 COMPUTER (you didn't really want it anyway, except to get 5 points)
W (+2=61)
(If you haven't bought an Atari computer, you can buy one here as shown below.)
E
N (you're at the right location for the meeting) (+2=63)
(D) (the door is locked)
ENTER ROOM (good luck if you guessed that one) (+2=65)
(L) (welcome to the meeting of B.A.S.I.C.)
(SCORE) (your score is 65, you're AWESOME!!!)
***THE END***
And, just for fun, here's a minimum-move solution wwhere we ignore the score:
D (+2=4)
EXAMINE KEYS
TAKE KEYS (+5=9)
U
N (+2=11)
N (+2=13)
NW (+2=15)
USE KEYS
NW (+2=17)
NW (+2=19)
W (+2=21)
BUY ATARI COMPUTER
TAKE ATARI COMPUTER (+5=26)
E
N (+2=28)
ENTER ROOM (+2=30)
(SCORE) (your score is 30, get an IBM PC)
***THE END***
