OPERATION BERLIN
by A. J. Wright

Spectrum 48

This is a long, quite challenging game, except for two things you really
can't logically figure out. The vocabulary at times is too specific. Which, I
suppose, makes it very challenging.

Hints (not in order):

Don't have enough money to pay for a cab? Go to the bank.

You can only select 11 of the 12 objects available. The instructions (also
available at World of Spectrum) indicate that the game plays differently,
depending on the objects you have with you. For this walkthrough, a hint is:
you don't need to take pictures.

Examine the case once it is open.

The maze with the grille is tricky. So are the locations around the bus
station.

Even though you do not use the lighter at the rendezvous, it is needed, but
it won't be useful if it's empty.

Remember that there are two drawers in your office, the first one and the
other one.

The bric-a-brac needs to be examined in a thorough way. Use the adverb first.

Make sure you have read the Bible, so you can decipher the message later, and
not panic when the guard takes it away from you. How to decipher the code?
You can't. But if you say DONE NOW, you will eventually get access to the
manhole (otherwise there is always a guard there). It may also allow you see
a location you would not otherwise.

You get killed when you leave your room? Have you read the notice? And done
what it says to do?

How to deal with the dog? Check out the locations around the garage first to
find and use objects to kill the dog. Don't forget to check out the kitchen.
The correct verb to use with the object you find is STICK. Use it where
breaking glass might alert someone.

Red herrings: the directory, all the things in your secretary's desk, one
object in the catalogue.

Keep missing our contact at the platform? Your timing needs to be exact.

Solution:

Part 1:
To start, the game asks for the security label. HIJL [you are John Blake (the
fixer). You are an undercover operator, the "killer arm" for a secret
organization, with Charles Jenson your boss. You have a device implanted in
your brain allowing you to be killed if you are disloyal.

You are in the departure lounge of Heathrow airport (you see a newspaper),
TAKE NEWSPAPER, READ NEWSPAPER, INVENTORY (you are wearing a suit), SEARCH
SUIT (you have a wallet, a passport and a diary), EXAMINE PASSPORT, OPEN
WALLET, INVENTORY (you have a credit card), EXAMINE SUIT, SEARCH POCKET,
INVENTORY (you have a keyring and small change), EXAMINE KEYRING (brass key),
S, (you hear an announcement that John Blake, scheduled to leave for New
York, should contact the Information Desk), E, E, S (you tell her you've been
paged; she needs proof of identity), SHOW PASSPORT (you are to contact
Charles Johnson by telephone immediately), N, W, N, ENTER BOOTH, OPEN DIARY
(his number is 637-2323), TELEPHONE JENSON (dial the number), 637 2323 (he
wants you back at Dacre Street, then to go to the briefing room and bring the
file on Professor Wolff with you), S, S, E, N (in the bank), SHOW CREDIT CARD
(approach the teller), APPROACH TELLER (you get money).

Go S, W, S, W (you see a queue of people waiting), JOIN QUEUE, WAIT, WAIT,
ENTER CARRIAGE (in the cab), SAY DACRE STREET (it'll be 10 pounds and he
wants the money up front), GIVE MONEY, LEAVE CAB, ENTER BLOCK (in foyer),
PRESS BUTTON, ENTER LIFT, EXAMINE PANEL, SAY 2, LEAVE LIFT, N, E (in your
secretary's office), N (in your office; you see a filing cabinet, and a desk
with two drawers), UNLOCK DRAWER, OPEN DRAWER, TAKE YALE KEY, UNLOCK FILING
CABINET, OPEN FILING CABINET, DROP YALE KEY, TAKE FILE, EXAMINE FILE
(Wolff's), UNLOCK OTHER DRAWER, OPEN OTHER DRAWER, DROP KEYRING, TAKE
LIGHTER, EXAMINE LIGHTER (empty), DROP DIARY, TAKE BIBLE, EXAMINE BIBLE (code
book), S, OPEN DRAWER (you see a magnet, hat pin, and a stapler), DROP
PASSPORT, DROP CHANGE, DROP WALLET, W, N, N, UP, E, E

Go S (you give Jenson the file; he tells you the rescue is doomed to fail
because the KGB will be informed from their double agents at MI5; you are to
recover the plans and replace them with a false set. Second, if Wolff is
still alive, and you think it feasible you are to rescue him; if not, you
must terminate him, and make it looks natural; the Soviets will then have no
reason to suspect that the false plans that they hold are the real ones. CJ
will arrange for Travis to be delayed on his arrival in Berlin. You will
rendezvous with the double agent instead of Travis and get the information.
The rendezvous is to take place at 20:00 hours local time in the Zoo
underground station; you will stand under the station sign and carry a
newspaper; the agent will make contact by asking for a match; you will reply,
no, but I have a lighter. Once you have the information, you must terminate
him. You must complete the assignment by 24:00 hours. You follow CJ and see a
catalogue; he gives you the false plans in microfilm format), READ CATALOGUE,
1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12. (You are given the code to enter part 2).

Part 2:
Enter the code you were given at the end of Part 1. You go back to your
apartment to get personal things; you go to Heathrow. CJ gives you a false
passport in Travis' name. He tells you that Travis had arranged a room at the
Hotel Berlin. The KGB will likely know of MI5's intentions, so you may pick
up a KGB surveillance team. He disappears. You fly to Berlin. On the way to
the hotel you see a black Mercedes following you. You arrive at the reception
desk. RING BELL, SIGN REGISTER (you are given an envelope), EXAMINE ENVELOPE,
W, UP, E, N, W, READ NOTICE (room service is available by dialing 100), OPEN

to make sure you are not followed), INVENTEORY (you have a case), UNLOCK
CASE, OPEN CASE (you change your clothes).

DETECTOR (you find a bug on the phone), SMASH BUG, TAKE ALL, DROP DETECTOR,
DIAL 100 (you get his jacket and he tells you to go down the back stairs and
through the kitchen to the back yard and leave his jacket there; you put on
the jacket and leave, locking yourself out in the process), N, N, DOWN (you
are told to take the rubbish to the bin; you dump the rubbish but are locked
out), EXAMINE DUSTBIN, EXAMINE RUBBISH, REDESCRIBE (you see a ticket), TAKE
TICKET, EXAMINE TICKET (a travel pass for public transport), DROP JACKET, E,

Checkpoint Charlie, put it in the boot; when you reach the terminus, go south
taking the second exit on your right; At the end of the road there is a
garage; the door will be open, go up to the flat above and in the lounge you
will find a note pad. I have written down all the help I can provide you
with; (mostly in code); the letter is unsigned. After reading it you destroy
it. DROP LOCKER KEY, S (the coach is here), OPEN BOOT (you stow your
equipment and the engine starts).

ENTER COACH (the guard tells you you need to leave the Bible behind), TAKE
ALL, S, S (at crossroads), E, E, S, E, TAKE WEEDKILLER, EXAMINE WEEDKILLER

presently stored in the security vault in Afansayev's office. The vault is on
a time control and has been sealed until 8am. At 8am, Afansayev will collect
the plans and take them to Moscow personally for decoding. The only way of
opening the vault before 8am is by using Afansayev's identity card. Except
for security control, the complex has been sealed until the morning. All the
rooms in the complex are fitted with security cameras, monitored 24 hours a
day. His office can only be accessed by passing through security control.
Despite all these measures, I believe the system can be breached by using the
following method and thereby secure the plans. The rest of the notes are in
